Glad they are doing better. :) Also, newly hatched chicks get nutrients from the yoke for about 3 days after they hatch. So they should be fine even if they are not eating for the first few days. Hope that helps a little bit!
If she is still sitting on the eggs, go ahead and let her keep sitting. If she reaches her limit with little ones hatched, she will get up. We have a hen who (after 5 hatched and later killed by the rooster) successfully hatched 2 chicks with no problems and decided that was her limit this...
Also, we thought momma hen was the one hurting the little ones first, as well, because she seemed so protective/ aggressive when we tried to get to her or the chicks/eggs, but that was just because of all of the stress she was under with us bothering her and also from her trying to ward off all...
This happened to about 5 of our newly hatched chicks. We think one of our roosters got into the nesting box and tried to "eliminate" any new comers to the flock. My husband had to section off the hen and all of her eggs so that she would be the only one allowed to be around them, and that did...
I'm so sorry to hear that they will be dinner soon. Could you just keep the hen that way there is no crowing but you can still have the sweet girl and also some awesome eggs once she starts laying? That would be such a tough choice for me too.
Regarding the hen hogging the food, I think you...
I used to have a brown leghorn, Butterscotch, who looked very similar to yours. We unfortunately lost her to a dog, but she was great - very skittish, like you said - but great! The barred really are a calmer breed. Best of luck to you and your lovely hens! :)
Thank you very much for the info! We will definitely try some of those things. Will that help the loose flap of skin reattach to the wound do you think? My husband mentioned something about maybe suturing it possibly because the fat/muscle under it is so susceptible to everything right now.
By the way, your chickens are beautiful. My husband and I have 6 adult barred rocks (plus 2 newly hatched barred chicks) and a couple other mixed welsummer varieties. Is that a brown leghorn you have as well?
That might just be what it is. If they are healthy and you just see some feathers missing or around the area, they are probably just getting some new lovely feathers in. My geese are molting like crazy right now. I clipped their wings a couple months ago and a whole new set of feathers have...
Does he rooster mount her a lot? I know my hens get really stressed out when they are "molested" often. Also the heat in South Carolina makes my flock pant a lot as well. If you feel like it is an internal health problem, maybe check out your local feed store and see if there are any additives...
This morning, my husband found that one of our hens, Pippa, has an open wound under her left wing. The wound is about 1.5 inches diameter and right below it is a flap of skin that is showing some fat; so the wound is very much open. We are not really sure how this happened. It could be from...
