I am not sure exactly what breed it would be, but if I am not mistaken there were several catch and release with turkeys around the US tryign to reestablish wild turkey populations that have resulted in cross-bred hybrids. If you see 2 traits in that bird, that could easily be the case.
We killed a few GG's 2 weeks ago, mainly the excess roosters we had been feeding out. They were huge, I wish I had weighed them, but they were easily twice as big as a normal quail. The breasts were huge. And they tasted great. As I remember, we only had about a 50% hatch, but we didn't order...
We put in 120 coturnix last Saturday, so we are a little bit ahead of you. It's time to test the cold weather fertility. We are not getting our expectations up to early, but we are hoping to get quite a few.
We have tried several recipes of the internet, but we weren't interested in the picling spice taste. It seems like the best quail eggs I ate from the store just had pepper spice and vinegar, so that is what we tried last time. I went to the local Mexican supermarket and talked to the owner and...
If any one has any experience with the laws in Alabama, please shootm a PM for some questions. I can't find anything on the elusive Alabama Wildlife website about anything except bobs. I am wanting to sell fresh coturnix eggs (not guaranteed hatching eggs), and possibly hatch and sell some...
So for anyone wondering about shelley eggs, I finally hatched out 69 total out of 100 eggs. Nearly 70% on shipped eggs is not bad from what I hear. They are all thrifty as they can be, and growing like mad. I'll try to get the digital camera away form my wife and get some pictures to...
Thanks Shelley,
I had 9 more hatch last night, so I am up to 64 now. And I don't think they are done yet. I'm gonna be patient and see what else happens.
Another update through Day 17: There were 43 last night, I just moved 12 more out of the bator tonight, and left 2 in that wre not dry yet. So I am up to 57, or 57% which is not bad. I am still anticipating hatching going on over night and tomorrow. I am letting them sit until Wednesday or...
The first batch I hatched were bobwhites, and they are wild as they can be. When they were chicks they flipped out every time I got into the brooder. Now thatthey are 7 week sold, they are worse. The coturnix that hatched last night are docile in comparison, so it may be a breed specific thing.
For an update, I heard chirping yesterday morning, but seeing pips in a dark incubator in coturnix eggs was a futile effort. I went about the business of processing our mutt chickens and my wife came out around 4 and asked if I knew I had quail hatching. I said yes. When I looked, it awas...
Well, today is day 14 on the eggs I got from Shelly, and things have gone unusally well.
Humidity has stay at 40-50% the whole time.
Temp has only varied form 99 to 101. (Thermometers with memories rock).
I have not opened the bator even to candle, I'm just playing patient.
So tonight I...
Well, i bought 100 eggs from shelley they arrived yesterday with none broken. She does an awesome packing job. I have let them settle, and I will be adding them to the incubator tonight. I am hoping for good luck.
I bought 120 eggs from them and I only had around 50 hatch. Only 11 were not developed (clear) when I candled early. They had good fertility, but I didn't hatch nearly as many as I thought I would.
I don't know that it is their fault, as the eggs were shipped, and this was my first time...
Also,
I see that people are breeding so mayn diferent colors of coturnix. Does this affect the meat at all? Or are some colors more specifically made for meat, other than A&Ms of course.
So I have seen on the forums that Coturnix have dark meat. I have had bobs before, and they were mostly white. By dark meat, do you mean like dark meat on a chicken, or do you mean like dark (really dark) meat that is on a dove? I like both, just want to clarify before I get into coturnix...
Where exactly in Middle Tennessee? I am in DeKalb County Alabama (northeast corner). I might be interested in the Coturnix, but I don't need buttons. Would that be a problem?
I have 40 bobwhites in North Alabama, but that does you no good. There was a gentleman in Columbus, GA on here last week somtime trying to cull some 5 week olds from his flock, but I have no idea what colors they were. You might look that post up and ask him, if you don't mind a little travel...
