Ok, I'll chime in on the Shelley Back Patting Party

I picked up about 77 eggs from her a little ways back (she lives by me) and I had one go stinky during incubation, but out of the 76 left I had 60 hatch.

I figured that was pretty good ratio, since A) I suck at hatching quail and B) I didn't pay much attention to the incubator at all

I think my humidity was usually around 35-40ish and temps ranged from a low of 97 to a high of 103 at one point. During hatch I managed to raise the humidity to around 60 - wouldn't go any higher than that.

I'm stopping by on Sunday to pick up another 100 or so eggs.

My Shelley eggs and some eggs from the Martins farm will be placed on lockdown on Wednesday. My kids/gkids will be here for the hatch as I will be on vacation...very poor planning on my part!! LOL. Kids will love watching the quail hatch. In the meantime we are beginning to harvest my previous hatch and yummmo!! Should be getting eggs from the females soon.

For an update, I heard chirping yesterday morning, but seeing pips in a dark incubator in coturnix eggs was a futile effort. I went about the business of processing our mutt chickens and my wife came out around 4 and asked if I knew I had quail hatching. I said yes. When I looked, it awas like a popcprn popper, I don't even know how many had hatched. So last night before going to bed, I pulled a fast switch to get them into the brooder, and at best count there were 43 (popcorn popping again, counting baby quail is tough). This morning, I moved about 10 more in I think that hatched overnight. That puts me just over 50%, and I am hoping for more when I get home tonight to blow 50% away.

Shelley, they look like a healthy mix of colors. There are several A&Ms (all yellow, some with a spot or 2), there are 3-4 tux's (yellow belly and dark back), several that are yellow with brown stripes (no idea what color variation they will be), and there are several that are brown with light stripes on their back (i am thinking these are normal goldens).

Feel free to correct my colors if you feel like it.

You probably have more tuxedos than you think. There should be some rosetta tuxedos, and they don't have very good markings yet. Here's the post that I put up for Chickiechick:

Here's some baby pics

In this one, there are 2 tuxedo babies, the black one with yellow on its face in the back, and the reddish one in front of it. The black is a dark tibetan, reddish is rosetta tibetan.

This one has the same black and yellow one in the back, then the one laying on the floor in the middle is also a tuxedo, a rosetta on that. There is also a dark tibetan tux on the right, in front of the others.

This one has 3 in the corner, there are 3 yellow chicks (A&M), 1 golden (yellow with brownish stripes), then 3 tuxedos. They are 2 dark tibetans and a rosetta. The rosetta just has a bit of yellow around the eyes. There are 3 goldens in this picture. (yellow with brown stripes)

This one has a tux (dark tibe) on the left facing the camera, another dark tibe in the back looking up, another one on the right, behind the browns. You can just see its face by the A&M chick. Then there is a rosetta tux in the very front (side view).

This is also a rosetta tux, with better markings than the others.

Anyway, as you can see, the tuxedos don't necessarily have the all-yellow breasts and bellies, I'll have to work on those

The yellow with brown stripes is probably a golden.

The ones that are kind of black with red stripes are the jumbo browns.

Another update through Day 17: There were 43 last night, I just moved 12 more out of the bator tonight, and left 2 in that wre not dry yet. So I am up to 57, or 57% which is not bad. I am still anticipating hatching going on over night and tomorrow. I am letting them sit until Wednesday or Thursday just to make sure they have all the chances they can.

P.S. Shelly, let me know when you can get another batch of whatever these were (4-5 days). My dad has seen these come along now and he wants to buy a set for me to hatch also. We're gonna have quail running out our ears.

Mmmmm.. so many quail so many delicious ways to prepare. Had tarragon quail tonite with couscous. Very tasty. Convinced my hubby that I could cook as well ( I'm better, but who counts) as his sainted mother. I think he figured out that I was provoked the other nite! LOL. Have processed about 50 of my birds. Now the choices get harder.

You will LOVE having the quail around. I really love hearing the boys crow. Its really more of a warble, but its wonderful to listen to. Enjoy your babies. They grow really, really fast. V

i noticed that their crow is a warble at about six weeks but as they age is becomes a harder sound and less warblie(?). quail puberty!!!
