Thanks for your answers.
Two ducks are both sitting on the clutch all the time now. Holding at 30 eggs. The first batch should hatch at the end of next week.
Our Rouen has been sitting on her eggs for 3 weeks. She started with 18 eggs, then 20, now 30 eggs. Also a sometimes there are 2 duck sitting on the clutch. The more recent eggs are not in sync with the original 18 eggs? What should I do? What happens when the 18 hatch in another week and the...
They could be Rouens or mallards. They look exactly alike only difference is Rouens are larger. I got ducks at TSC and they were mallards. I am not sure they carry Rouens but not sure.
Hatching duck eggs. Should an air cell be visible on day 1? When I candle on day 1, the yolk looks like it is in the rounded end and no air cell seen. Is that ok or bad egg.
Thanks
Rouens can only fly at most 100 yds b/c they are too heavy. They will not fly away. They don't roost but stay on the ground at night and are very vulnerable to predators if not penned safely at night. They are also a tight knit group and much more flock oriented than chickens. Congratulations...
Thanks. So about 24hrs after internal pip they should external pip (up to 36 hrs). If not, do you assist external pip? With a large needle or a small drill?
3 have internal pip, I'm pretty sure. The 4th is only moving weakly and does not look like it has pipped.
Thanks for answering. I guess I should not candle during lock down. Right? How will I know I one needs help ? How long between the internal pip and the external pip?
The girls will be BFF. You don't need a male
Except you will not have fertile eggs or babies. If there are other duck breeds around you could get cross breed ducklings.
I watched my baby Rouens very closely last year trying to tell the sex. Also did a lot of reading. The voice is different early. The males having a raspy quack. Four things I noticed early and my prediction for their sex was correct. Males have a raspy voice. Their beaks and feet are lighter and...
We started with 3 day old Rouens a year ago. After 2 early losses we had 8 beautiful mature ducks, 4 drakes 4 hens. In Jan they started disappearing. They live on our pond and go in a shelter at night but not locked in. We live adjacent to a National Forest so we suppose it is a predator like...
At first one drake, then a week later 1 more drake would just vanish at night, no traces, no sightings of any predators. Then 2 vanished in one night, a drake and hen. The last one was different, it happened in the early morning after we had checked them. Our dogs started barking in the yard...
We have a pond fed by our creek which comes from the National Forest. For the last week we have a single otter swimming in our pond in the early morning. It did get one of the trout, ate the head and tail. The chickens are cooped and fenced. The ducks retire to the creek when the otter visits...
