4 AM: A problem or totally normal?

The answer is to determine what changed on Saturday, and if it is still happening every morning, or did they just discover the bonanza that occurs when they make a racket at 4 am? Chickens are smart, but I don't think they learn that fast, and I doubt it would be that punctual. The fact that...

    Where's the oviduct?

Yes, she is hunched up. At first I thought it was the cold. Others do that and they're fine. I've dealt with the salpingitis before, but not a tumor. That could explain why I'm having so much trouble finding the egg this time. I think I've found the oviduct, but it's so tight, I can't get in...

    Where's the oviduct?

Thanks for your suggestions. It helps to have others "around" who understand. My husband isn't helpful. He'd just kill it at the first sign of trouble, so he just listens and watches with amusement as I doctor them. I've been "in" a chicken before. I've helped straighten a sideways egg, I've...

    Where's the oviduct?

I know this info is on here somewhere, but I just can't find it. I've been searching for almost an hour. Just don't know the magic search term. I've done this in the past, so not entirely new, but I've also ended up in the rectum sometimes. I think left side down low, but other times I've read...

    Any luck with double yolkers/twins?

At the very end of the video, you can see that the one on the left is breathing. The one on the right.... I can't tell... doesn't look good, the way it's curled up. But I agree, I wouldn't even try to hatch it. I wouldn't want to put them through what could be a painful death near the end or...

    Metronidazole doseage..

It worked! Taste was a little bit better. It was sweet before the bitterness hit. Stuff still settled (must be very heavy), but slowly enough to measure and get a dose.

    Metronidazole doseage..

!!!! THANKS !!!! Very expensive, though. Do you think corn syrup or honey would work? Actually, I'll try that now. I hope the sweetener will make the bitterness at least a little tolerable.

    chicken attacked by dogs

I'm so sorry. I just read your post about her death. :( :( :( The hardest part of keeping chickens. This may be helpful for someone in the future, though: I found Chlorhexadine at a CVS. It's used to clean injection or surgical sites. There are huge bottles of it at the farm store. Brand is...

    Metronidazole doseage..

Nope. Not quite. I originally found this method in an Avian Vet book for aspirin. It also works for meds in capsule or pill form that dissolve thoroughly. I have since found that pills work best if I can cut them properly. I toss them down their throat. It doesn't taste bad, so they're more...

    chicken attacked by dogs

How's she doing? Is that brown area on her back skin? Poor girl. I've had a couple of these. Had an "Americauna" with a tear like that at the base of the tail. That was the most difficult to heal. We were given silver sulfadiazine to put on it. I had to have all of them stitched up by a vet...

found answer to bird not walking

I didn't think to take pictures. They were an opaque grayish yellow (she's a Rhode Island Red) and very thick. The best way I could describe the thickness and toughness of the scales would be a plastic milk jug or even a bleach bottle for the thickest scales. Scaly leg mites was my first...

found answer to bird not walking

I thought I'd put this out there for someone to find in the future if they encounter the same problem. It seemed dreadful, but had a simple solution that took me weeks to figure out. One of our older girls gradually stopped walking. When she was sitting and standing, she would seem to start to...

    Metronidazole doseage..

Realize this is old, but I can answer it. My "fishzole" is pure metronidazole. It comes with a small measuring spoon which equals 500 mg. I found that this measuring spoon holds 1/4 tsp. One way to dose the bird would be to dissolve 1/8 tsp in 1 ml water. That would give you 250 mg per ml. A...

    Strange Tunnels

The "Chicken Chick" has a very comprehensive article on rodent control: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/06/15-tips-to-control-rodents-around.html She recommends burying the hardware cloth 12 inches down rather than out to stop burrowing animals. Maybe metal edging would stop them? Garden...

The UK! Howdy! :frow Does that word exist in the UK? Or is it a uniquely weird US word? Wait! Wikipedia to the rescue: "Howdy is an informal greeting, commonly thought to have originated as a shortened form of the greeting "How do you do?". It was first recorded as part of the South England...

Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

They know who loves them and watches out for them. Our Rottweiler mix (Alice) is very protective. No blue jay or c:mad:hickadee is allowed near. Squirrels are treed. Baby rabbits are killed :hit Nevertheless, Alice is terrified of Rhode Island Reds after a new little spitfire RIR started...

    Can chickens be barren?

We had an "Amercauna" (almost certainly an Easter Egger) who never laid an egg to our knowledge. NEVER saw her in a nest box unless she was hiding from the others (she was LOW in the pecking order). Looked everywhere for eggs. Vent always small and dry. Never squatted like a laying hen. She was...

    Sign out problems

Never mind. Scrolling the page is working now. Computers! The "button" to sign out is at the bottom of the Your Account menu. I can't get my cursor or page to go far enough down to click it. The menu reaches past the bottom of the window. Scrolling the page doesn't move the menu. I've tried...

Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

Acts like my Americaunas/Easter Eggers. Some I can only pick up off the roost at night and they scream like they're being mauled. I agree with the advice so far. Patience, treats, sweet talking, sitting still. Works with most non-lethal animals.

Bumblefoot after the pus is out.

Thank you for responding! That's what I ended up doing. It's a relief to know I did the right thing. I dug around a bit trying to get some more pus out that I could see, but it started bleeding too much. The flesh was starting to "relax" into the empty area by the time I was bandaging up, so I...
