So if it's a bird of prey, what is the defense? Netting over the top? The entire top?

I have been in this house for 20 years and never seen a fox.

    The Mystery of Vanishing Chickens

So... this year was my entry into raising chickens from chicks, partially for myself, and partially to sell. Recently, I did my last inventory and came up five birds short. My initial concern was theft by someone who was aware of my flock and I had sent driving instructions to, so I promptly...

Eye Gone... guess we'll name this one "Blinky?"

So I went out today, and could not any of the three products you mention. Arg. Plus, the few things that they did have (not on your list) were 30 bucks and up. Sorry, the economics of chickens prohibit me from going there. :) Can I use an OTC product like neosporin? Or would I be better off...

Eye Gone... guess we'll name this one "Blinky?"

How long should she be kept out of the general population? I can put her in a brooder while she heals.

Eye Gone... guess we'll name this one "Blinky?"

Went out to the coop today to find one of my Americauna pullets being picked on pretty mercilessly. Haven't seen any aggressive behavior like this before. Looks like she may have actually lost an eye. Separated her from the GP, wondering what steps to take next. I hope euthanizing isn't...

    Marking Pullets

So, my leg bands came, and I must say I am not thrilled with them. Plus I might have made a mistake ordering RED ones. All the other chickens seem to want to peck at them! Seems like you really have to stretch them out to maximum size and let the plastic's "memory" contract. Also not happy with...

    Americauna / Arucauna Cockerel?

Wellllllllll... inside city limits I am restricted as to what I can keep. Since I ignore the restriction on number of birds, probably best to not draw attention to that with a crowing, disallowed rooster.

    Easter Egger / Americauna Question

I posted some questions about one of my Americauna / Auracauna chickens in another thread. One of the surprising replies I got back is that the chicken isn't a Americauna / Auracauna at all, but a breed called an "Easter Egger?" So... this was my first year raising chicks (and selling pullets...

    Americauna / Arucauna Cockerel?

Well, "she" started crowing about 2 days after I posted this. So if you said "rooster" you were correct.

    Americauna / Arucauna Cockerel?

So... I have some thoughts that one of my favorite new pullets may actually be a cockerel. I'd like to vent sex (https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/886680/vent-sexing) him/her but I don't want to potentially injure him/her in the process. Attaching a few photos for your opinions. Definitely the...

    Vent Sexing

Are there any EXCELLENT video-based resources out there for vent sexing chickens? I have found a few so-so ones with illustrations, but they have all scared me off because they emphasize that if I do this improperly I could injure them. I'm selling pullets and would like to reduce the...

    Pullet Feed Question...

"so much" for me is 3-4 bags. And I do supplement quite a bit with fresh vegetables.

    Pullet Feed Question...

Allrighty, so my suspicions are validated. I will stick with the grow formula until at least 16 weeks. Thanks.

    Pullet Feed Question...

So I am feeding my new flock the Purina Medicated "Grow" layer crumble. But these little beasts are ravenous, and I find myself going out in the afternoon with a second round, as all of their morning feed has been completely devoured. I have been starting to supplement their diet with...

    broken toe

My broken toed girl is also doing fine. The foot looks a little wonky upon close inspection, but I really have to search for her among the entire flock. She isn't limping at all and seems to be getting along just fine. Phew! :)
