well thank you for that very positive post. But all that free space is not mine, and i have not been working due to illness, so it's not very easy to get out of bed and go and build a bigger coop, with no money, and no health/energy. It's also pretty dang hard to clean out frozen chicken poop in...
hahaha! col.Sanders lol. I tell my hens things like that a lot too. I've turned a couple of the older hens into a nice slow cooker dish already. They were laying badly even before though. I was just in there and at least 11 are in molt that I could tell. All kinds of very fluffy feathers...
That molting you're talking about maybe is what's happening to some of mine. I did notice they were all starting to go featherless, and now they all seem to be growing their feathers back. Though it's only about 7 or so birds. Hmm I hope mine start laying again soon!
So my hens were laying only about 16-23 eggs per day. Even though there are 40 of them.
But then a series of events happened and now I'm down to 2-4 per day. This is driving me nuts!
All in the same week I got a new puppy, who I bring with me into the coop because I want to train him to be...
Where is a good place to buy an incubator online? preferably canada ,but usa works too.
I found these on ebay..are they any good?

Well at first i thought it was due to over crowding, and maybe that it was the older hens that weren't laying. but now that we killed the older hens, we are getting even less eggs! maybe it will just take a bit longer for them to start laying now that there are less chickens?
Okay so last fall just before winter, my new hens were all starting to lay, then my neighbors dogs came and killed two chickens. after that egg production dropped like crazy. I posted several posts on here and couldn't get them to lay. Eventually i figured out that 24 hour light wasnt good for...
well after doing a bit of reading i think the answer is just boredom and it is apparently common with the leghorn breed. it only happens during the winter and now there are only three or four birds that keep doing it. no lice etc. checked them well about a dozen times.
so i decided to buy this...
a few of my birds have been pecking out their own and each others feathers over winter, and most have stopped now that it's spring but i'd like to deter the few that still are.
what household items can i apply to deter them? I don't want to have to go and buy some fancy expensive stuff from...
I have two big windows on my coop and it was crazy how warm those windows make the the shed during winter. I am in Canada and we get pretty harsh winters here, but those windows really made a big difference. I would say do not cover it up with anything other than plastic if you have to, the more...
thanks! yeah now that i think about it i feel like an idiot for asking about the salt lol. mine love to eat snow too. theyre always pecking it off my boots when i go in there
Hey, thanks for the info and answers! Well I usually open the coop door when it's warm out but when it's cold i keep it shut to keep the warmth in. I built my coop with windows, big ones. One is actually a sun room type of door with a window from top to bottom and then i have another window...
I should also mention that they have be confined all winter. on warmer days i do let them out but they don't really seem to want to come out of the coop. more than half just stay inside, they hate the snow, I am in Canada so its -15C here most days and there is snow covering the ground.
Are...
So last year i got ten hens and they all came to me in the spring. the farmer told me that they had bare backs because they were cooped up all winter and that's just what they do. That spring I also hatched out 15 chicks from those same hens.
In the fall, and early winter, those girls suddenly...
Thanks, i just cant figure it out! i've searched online. after a day or two all the chicks were nice and fluffed up, i guess they groom themselves and what not
So just an update...20 chicks have hatched so far, and all but one are doing fine and very healthy. but ALL are crusty. it is now the next day and only two are fluffed up and they are not fully fluffy even. WHAT THE HECKK!!?? IS GOING on?
