My ducks are most definitely upset about the weather. Normally they only go into the coop to eat and lay their eggs. I don't think they've ventured out more than twice today!
I ended up pulling my drake out of the coop because he was making the girls go bald. Any ideas of when I could put him back? I don't really want him and if he has to be in solitary confinement for more than a few weeks he may just end up in the oven….
I agree with your second sentence whole heartedly!
My other half is also longing for fishing season. He's been driving by the local lakes to see if the ice is gone every chance he gets!
Hi again!
I was doing some more looking at my girls last night and ALL of them have a bald spot. My Muscovies are starting to look like monks. This cannot possibly be normal behavior.
One of my female Pekins has that too. I looked it up and it's a normal coloration change for some ducks. It has to do with hormonal changes and you can ignore it. :-)
Hello! I recently acquired a few adult Khakis and have some questions.
I picked up 4 Khakis from a local girl and integrated them into my existing mixed duck flock. The Khaki drake (only stud in the bunch) seems to be mating the non-Khaki females more than the girls he came with. I had four...
My ducklings are growing up so fast! We have decided that one of the 'Pekins' we got from TSC is actually a Runner duck (drat) but we will adapt. Amazingly all three seem to be female (assuming we checked correctly) and that's never happened before! The current count is 3 Pekins, 4 Khakis, 1...
I got two 'Pekins' from TSC this year and I'm pretty sure one of them is a Runner duck even though the store insists that can't possibly be true. I think there's a high likelihood of mix ups along the way! Mine are about 3-4 weeks.
I have a duck husbandry question.
I have a year old female whose legs are swollen were the shank meets the body. She can barely walk and has started using her wings as 'crutches'. She doesn't move much and it obviously in some pain. The joints are very tender and warm. She's been limping a bit...
The ground at our house finally thawed enough for a little tilling in the garden. All the poopy bedding from the duck stall was shoveled out and shallowly tilled in for hopefully a better garden crop. We had some issues with peppers and cantaloupe last year. The watermelon didn't do that well...
I've had my brooder in the unheated barn for two years now and haven't had a problem keeping my babies warm. I just add more bulbs or cut down their available space to keep in the heat. I also keep it covered with multiple blankets.
The other one seems happy as a clam. I haven't noticed any odd poop.
Obviously the dark one is not a Pekin :-) but I was starting to wonder about the smaller 'Pekin'. I've never seen runner ducks in TSC but I suppose someone could have made a mistake.
