Ok so I'm having sudden issues with a hen that started yesterday. Began as loss of balance, walking sideways, falling on her rump, & picking one of her feet up & pulling it up to her body a lot. This morning she cant walk or sit up right. Stuck on her side practically. I'm praying this isn't...
keesmom is correct. They could have gotten it from the yard from an infected wild bird (rare but it happens) or from contaminated shoes, equipment, etc. What are their symptoms?
The little sucker had just stopped crowing but still full stance lol. I don't have him anymore but I have his sisters. They are EEs (close but not 100% Ameracauna)
I wish I had a camera so I could leave it on them for a day and see what goes on :( I check often.
Is there a possibility the first egg came too early so that's why there's such a large gap in laying?
I wouldn't be able to rule it out, but it would be very strange for a snake to reutrn everytime she lays. Their coop is a chicken tractor thats moved daily. We also have an "suburban" yard bc we live on the edge of a subdivision...so not really snake environment. I've never seen a snake in the 3...
I'd say she's about 7-8 months now? Not exactly sure except that I do know she laid an egg once already, so she must be of age. And I got her from a friend that breeds polish and polish frizzles & such. She has a variety, so I doubt it could be something genetic from inbreeding or similar? But...
This hen is still not laying, and has not laid a single egg. I have felt her and cannot feel any obstruction or hard mass. She's been wormed with valbazen. I even started offering oyster shell. Still nothing. Any ideas? She isn't acting ill or anything in the least. Just normal but no eggs...
Get them started on some tetracyline or oxytetracyline crumbles if you want to keep them. Your local feed store or TSC should have something to treat respiratory symptoms. Be aware though that now that you have this, your other birds will get it, and they will be lifelong carriers most likely...
9 Delaware
8 Blue/Black Ameracauna
8 French Black Copper Maran
5 Easter Eggers
2 Frizzles
6 Silkies
4 Smooth Sizzle
9 Old English Game
Admittedly, many of these are roosters & will be re-homed, culled once they come of age.
Haha no not just chicks. I actually have 35 chicks. The rest are almost adults
I have chicken addiction problems :) they're really easy for me to manage though. I just have to spend a couple hours a day tending to them (not counting free range time if the"big kids" get let out.) I have to...
Good point. Well I never found her so it looks like they're mine now. Helps that they're cute . Question: Are they too young to give Corid in water? Less than a week old. I've got a chicken that's come down with cocci & I treated the big flock, but can't help thinking I should treat everyone...
Well unfortunately I don't live at home anymore but I will try to go by tomorrow at dusk and check their roost areas. They go pretty high up in the trees. It wouldn't make sense for her to have left on part of health bc I personally will toss feed to these chickens when I go to feed mine. They...
Has anyone seen, or had an experience with mother hens sitting on a nest until hatch, and then having her abandon the babies? I've never seen this & today when I went to my mother's house to feed chickens (I grow them out in a pen there b4 bringing home) I discovered a bunch of little day old...
If I have less than 10 or so (which I usually do, I hatch small batches) I will carry them out in my shirt. I just wear baggyish t-shirts when working with them and I will make a "pouch" and put them in it and hold the opening closed against my stomach. I find they snuggle up together and form a...
Thanks a bunch Judy! I have another inquiry if you care to help. There's a game rooster at my mother and stepfather's house that lost his ladies after a bad fight. These chickens gravitated to the property from other places over the years. So they're feral. He's gone blind in he injured eye and...
Thanks very much @svfarm I didn't think of that. I haven't wormed them to date. I haven't noticed any wormy poo, so I guess I'm off to find the best broad spectrum wormer.
Okay. Thanks for your reply @Judy . I just figured she would have laid another by now. But maybe she's just not ready. Should I be concerned if a month goes by and she has still only laid that one egg? I know Polish aren't the best of layers but I though they laid at least 2-3 a week.
So I have a black Frizzled Polish hen that laid me a tiny, perfectly-shaped egg (shorter than the length of a lighter) 2 weeks ago, maybe longer, and has laid me nothing since. I've been periodically looking at her vent & she looks normal. No discoloration, no weird goop & no dryness. I pick her...
I only had 3 hatch out of about 14 Can't remember how many I actually set, but under 15.
My little girl got a hold of the temp. knob a few times throughout, & turned it way down.
That in combination with the fact that the eggs were at least 7-9 days old before they were set is what leads me to...
Should be fine. Just put something over the top to hold in their warmth, (need a few air holes though) and I find giving them a stuffed animal really helps. They like to snuggle with it for the first few weeks. I just remove it once it gets really soiled. Some people have said to use a feather...
