Are these eggs okay to eat?

We went camping this last weekend and my BIL came over to check on the chickens and collect eggs while we were gone. Today when I went to give the chickens their treats I noticed that there were two eggs in their feeder (a hanging 5 gallon bucket feeder). I don't know how long they were there...

    Question about community nest boxes.

Quote: I wouldn't be able to put an opening on each end, because the far end wouldn't be up against the chicken coop. The way I'm wanting to do it would basically be putting a 2ft x 4ft nest box with one of the 2ft sides up against the chicken coop. The nest box would be inside the shed...

    Question about community nest boxes.

I was reading up on community nest boxes a few weeks ago, and I really like the idea. Most of the designs I have seen have the opening in the middle of the nest box that is maybe 3 or 4 feet long. When we built our coop we made it so one half it the coop and the other half is a shed. I was...

When can I switch from crumbles to pellets

I am keeping them on the grower feed...what I was wondering is when can I stop giving them the crumbled form and move them to the pelleted form of the grower feed.

    Washingtonians

Quote: Laura just a little advice on planting - cloudy or even rainy days are the best time to plant. Less shock on the plants and if you are planting seed-you won't have to worry about them drying out. Good luck with your garden We have planted most of our garden while it was raining to...

    Washingtonians

I think I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for too long...I was happy to wake up to gray skies this morning and get a break from the heat. My poor chickens yesterday, I went out to give them treats (leftovers from the kids ) and they were so hot I had to put it all under their little tree...

When can I switch from crumbles to pellets

I'm sure this has been covered numerous times here, but I don't have the time at the moment to go searching for it. My girls are 9 weeks old (I think). Is it okay to switch them to pelleted food? I need to buy a new bag of feed soon, so I figured I would check. When I do switch them over...

    vaccinations

Whether or not a virus is shed after vaccination depends on what form the vaccine is. If it is a live attenuated vaccine then it is shed. I don't know about poultry vaccines, but on the human side vaccines like chicken pox and MMR (among others) are live and anyone who receives them will shed...

can someone give me a quick run thru on the 1st few days in the coop?

How old are your chicks? Mine are 7wks old and went out into the coop a couple of days ago. Our nights are in the 50s and I don't have a heat lamp for them out there If they are fully feathered then they should be fine.

    Perches?

We used 1x1 boards as the roost, and other scrap wood to boost it up and make it stable...so basically, just extra stuff we had laying around:D

    Out they go!

My chicks are 7 weeks old and got booted out of my garage and into their new coop/run yesterday. The coop isn't completely finished, but it is done enough for them to live in. It has been neat watching them roam around outside, and I am surprised and how much less feed they went through...

Why won't they roost?? Please help!

My girls (8 wks I think) just moved out to their new coop last night. In their brooder box we had a couple of little roosts, and they would spend the night on them. But when my dh went out this morning he said they were all huddled together on the floor. It might have been because it was a...

    Washingtonians

I'm tempted to take the Wyandotte, Polish and Australorp. I need to check with the husband...and try to figure out what we would use for a heat lamp. My chickens are almost 4.5wks old, how hard would it be to introduce the new ones, once the new ones are bigger?

    young children and chickens

Like others have said, it is the same as with any animal...close supervision is key. Just like I don't leave my kids alone with our dog, I don't leave them alone with the chickens. I also have no problem rehoming (or sending to freezer camp) any animal that is aggressive

What to do for a floor?

It looks like we are going to be doing a wood floor with vinyl after all. My dh is a smart man to see it my way

What to do for a floor?

Quote: Well, so far our cost of materials is nothing . It looks like we will be able to scavenge all we need from my ILs (including some decent siding)...unless my DH decides to buy some 2x4s. So right now the only cost would be the concrete or vinyl floor. My DH had also mentioned pouring...

What to do for a floor?

Work is starting on new coop this week. We are actually going to scavenge, I mean recycle, some wood from my ILs tonight. But we can't decide what to do for the floor of the coop. We have mostly ruled out dirt, because we live in a fairly rainy climate, and I don't think we would be able to...

Snakes Chickens and 2 year olds

What is it with little boys and snakes. Two days ago I was out working on our chicken run and I heard my almost 3yo starting to cry. It took me a while to figure out what happened because he was sobbing so hard "Big.... .worm... bite....me" Poor little guy. His brother (almost 5) had...
