Thank you! I didn’t know chickens could develop fat pads! I figure there’s not much we can do, regardless, but wanted to get some other eyes on it. From what I’ve read, anesthesia is very hard for chickens to handle, so it would be more about keeping her comfortable if/when she starts to show...
Hi, folks,
Our now 4 yr old hen (one of 7) started developing a sensation (to me) of heaviness in her abdomen about 2 yrs ago. We’d had a hen with water belly (ascites) previously and, while I was concerned she was starting to develop that, it felt different to me. The vet didn’t detect...
One of our hens was limping badly. We took her to the vet who discovered a bruise on her inner hock - the skin turns green on chickens when they have a bruise, not blue/purple like ours, because their blood chemistry is different. Vet prescribed anti-inflammatories for 5 days and she is doing...
Hello! I volunteer with a local garden that has chickens, and I have my own first flock but they’re only 3 years old. One of the hens at the garden is considerably older and her feet look a bit gnarled, dragonny, thickened and scaly to me. Is this a normal part of aging for chickens or is there...
Oh, @Skibum , I'm so sorry. We had to say good-bye to two of our hens last year. One collapsed in the night due to a liver hemorrhage which I think was due to bad genetics, and the other had ascites which turned out to be a symptom of cancer for her. Boy, it was a time for all of us... She was...
That's a great idea! I often do that with other things... like a weed patch I've been at for ages and I just have to go do something else, but than I can come back to it... Or stretching my tight hip and then doing the rest of my work out and then stretching that tight hip again! :)
Awww, y'all, I was just going to start a thread for the same reason this one was started. Thank you for creating a space where we can honor our beloved chickens. I feel like a lot of people wouldn't get it, but I know you guys do.
We said good-bye to our copper penny henny, Porthos, yesterday...
Hi! I just came upon a post you responded to and wanted to say "Thank you" and "You're awesome!" Such good advice you gave this chicken keeper and reading your responses made me feel so good - this is what BYC is all about and I so appreciate the time and energy you put into offering this info...
Thanks so much, @Eggcessive. We agree that separating her doesn’t make much sense since mosquitos are carriers. Do you think vaccinating the other birds is a good idea?
Hi, folks! I’m betting this IS dry fowl pox based on photos on the site and some research, but this is my first flock so I’m looking for confirmation since I’ve never seen it in person. She has a collection of lesions on her right wattle, and just a few spots on her comb and left wattle...
I was wondering about snakes, too, but with little chickie legs left around, thought maybe not. I’m assuming snakes swallow them whole and don’t leave much evidence behind, but I don’t have personal experience with them.
Or if their bodies are aborting, I would imagine, but I would expect more blood if that were the case. Bun seems totally fine and was actively hopping and running around the house this evening like nothing was wrong, so that’s good, but I still don’t know what happened. We’ll see if it happens...
Thank you- will do
update- all nails seem fine, no visible blood anywhere and no pain when I gently press paws and nails.
I read online about pigmented urine- she’s had a couple red beet stems over the last few days. Could that be enough to pigment her urine?
