I had a broody hen and my parents had a cockerel that they didn't think was doing the business so it just made sense to try and hatch them out 😄. I set four mixed breed eggs on the 12th/13th (I think) so that sets hatch day at 3rd/4th July. I know two of the eggs are from Cream Legbar crosses...
Well this was lovely to come home to! Honestly thought I'd only have two hatch so having three is amazing. I'll wait until the morning to get some more photos.
One of four started pipping, going to see how it goes over the next 24/48 hours! I still think two stopped growing early on but fingers crossed for this one and their sibling.
I couldn't resist candling my four remaining eggs this morning (day 15 I think) and noticed broody had kicked one out of the nest. Sorry in advance for the bad photos, find it hard holding the torch and camera at the same time!
Silkie egg filled nicely, seems to have filled out all the way...
Did you buy hatching eggs and hatch it yourself?
Did you use your own flock for the egg?
Did you buy the chick?
If so, what was the chick advertised as?
I've got a broody hen sitting on four eggs due roughly 21st-23rd since I can't remember the exact date I set them! She's a Silkie who normally goes broody four times a year, she's a pretty reliable sitter and a good mother when they do arrive.
I had to get rid of a cockerel due to him being a...
Definitely getting cooler, won't be long til the water needs defrosting on a morning. The war with mites seems neverending, on the verge of just setting it on fire and buying a new one. Spent a few hours cleaning it and treating it then found this when I needed to refelt above the nest boxes...
Yeah I noticed that but I think it might be a trick of the light or something since it doesn't show up on another photo, I'll look after work.
Also thanks everyone, greatly appreciate it.
Hi there.
Just rescued two dumped chickens from the woods near me and I'm guessing they are boys? I have no idea about breed though but guessing mixed breed? Also what age do you think they are? They aren't crowing at the moment so I'm thinking they aren't that old?
Thanks for reading.
Good morning.
She watched me walk around their coop this morning with her good eye so that's a good start to the day. Also she knows how to use the feeder so she's not as helpless as first thought.
Anyway, on the brown hen, I noticed pupil size differing and cloudiness in the eye with the...
Hi there.
I've managed to rehome two hens from a guy who was packing in keeping chickens. One is a three year old brown layer (she's fine *check edit*) but one is a eight year old White Star who is blind in one eye. I'm quarentining them for the next four weeks but I was just wondering what you...
I've got a small mixed flock (different egg colours and sizes) so I use the Flockstar app to keep track. It's really easy to use and keep track once you know what egg belongs to who. You could have a rough guess or keep an eye on wattles and combs, the redder they are, the more likely they are...
I'm in the UK but I'm just using mixed hen corn from a local producer, it's never done me wrong for the few years I've been using it. It used to cost £6.50 ($9.02) for a 20kg bag but over Covid it seems to have climbed to £7.50 ($10.41). If it starts to climb any more and there's cheaper...
