Thanks for the reply! Yeah, I'm pretty sure it's been the lack of feed in the run. When I closed them up for the night the feeder was almost empty. Hopefully that will help. We're treating the vents with Epsom salt baths, cleaning, pushing in and using preparation H.
I think I may have figured out my problem. I haven't had a feeder in the run (only in the coop), and they're outside nearly all day. I went and bought a feeder this morning specifically for the run, and they have been eating like crazy out there. So, I think they're deficient in nutrients/diet...
I don't know what's going on, but I've had three out of ten hens with prolapsed vent in the last few days. I've dealt with this before but with one hen. They have tons of space in coop and enclosed run, feed in the coop, and water in the coop and run. Oyster shell provided and sand bedding in...
I'm dealing with the same thing. A few of my girls have some missing spots on the neck or thinned out areas on the neck. I sprinkle DE throughout the coop and haven't seen any mites, etc. Theyre totally healthy otherwise, but look a bit scraggly. I don't have a roo and haven't noticed more...
Hard to say. I just dealt with impacted crop, which lead to sour crop. If she has sour crop, her crop will literally feel like a water balloon and you'll smell a sour smell from her face (or breath). I know when it's hot out they'll drink a lot more water, resulting in runny poo - that's normal...
i know, their poop seems to harden into cement when it dries! Glad to hear she's free from that extra weight. We ended up trimming a piece of wood on the roost and it hasn't happened again for ours.

It's completely normal! My ISA chicks turned really light as well growing new feathers - I named one Marilyn as my "busty blonde"! She was almost white. They'll grow in more brown feathers over time, and some will end up being lighter or darker than others. I have one that's quick dark with...
Were you able to find out what was wrong? I have a hen that's looking quite "scraggly" lately - either she's pulling out feathers or getting picked on and her crop is small and kind of hard.
I've been collecting frozen eggs lately with our cold temps, due to the fact that I work all day and can't collect until dinner time. Haven't had any issues with them yet. I put them in the fridge and they're perfect by the time I use them.
Chickens will peck at anything they're curious about, but it can hurt! I've been bitten but I don't think it was intentional to hurt. One day I went in with my nails painted dark - never again! They went to town on my fingers!!
Quick update! After reassessing her when I got home, I realized that the blood was coming from her nose. She had dried crusty blood in her nostrils. So, looks like a nose bleed caused by a hard peck when roosting. She's good to go now - all are getting along. I'm so relieved!
I hope it doesn't continue! They're about 8 months old, so they're used to roosting. i thought since it was dark she wouldn't get pecked, but I guess they still know who's injured. :(
Checked this morning, and she clearly got pecked at more when trying to roost, little bits of blood on the roost and fresh dried blood on her. I think it's at the back of her head but still hard to tell. I have her set up in the dog pen within the coop. Lined the bottom with towels, put food and...
Arg, I didn't get pics! No obvious wound, cleaned her with wet cloth (warm water), then dry cloth so she's not wet - mostly dry crusted blood, but not as much as I thought. Mostly on her comb and along the side face feathers. Again, could not find anything obvious. All other girls look good (I...
I was closing up my coop for the night and noticed one of my hens had dried blood at the back of her head and over her comb. No obvious cut or injury and No other hens have blood on them. I'm thinking I'll go out there right away and wipe her up to see what's going on with warm wet paper towels...
They're pecking snow off each other's beaks, but looks like their damaging each other's beaks in the process. Beaks look worn and a bit damaged - I see the pecking and it's not malicious, but I'm thinking because they do it so often they're Beaks are getting hurt now. Don't know if there's...
