I know this is an old thread, but I saw this picture here: http://ourcountrychronicles.blogspot.ca/2011/08/silly-swimming-chickens-i-mean-ducks-i.html
The hens were panting, so they set them in the pool - watched them closely and lo and behold, the chickens seemed to like it.
This is good news. My Ameraucana has not laid an egg in about two weeks, but otherwise seems completely happy and healthy. I hope this is the case. She is only one - maybe about to molt?

Funny. I have great layers - also 2 years old and my Americauna has not had any eggs in two weeks. Same thing - no obvious signs of distress or change in behavior. The other three are laying an egg a day. This little hen has typically been my most productive. I'm going to hunt around for a...
We were planning to insulate the whole thing, but it got too putzy. The only insulation is the larger back wall. (2 inch foam). When it began to get chilly, we slid a piece of insulation foam over the top (under the plastic roofing). If you are familiar with the Garden Coop, the top of the...
Howdy fellow Minn-peeps,
I have been out of touch for awhile. After all my fussing and worry and all of your very helpful advice - my first winter has been uneventful. In fact, all my worries about my poor cold hens was for naught. In fact, they prefer to roost outside at night. (protected...
The top chick looks just like our Barred Rock. The third little girl down (with the black stripe by her eye) looks like either a laced-wing wyandotte or an Easter Egger (Americauna?). I was looking for pictures of my chicks at that age, but could only find younger pictures:
This little one...
Well, there are some that claim otherwise.
Like HERE.
And your chickens will be the best darn insect eaters, so no worries there.
I agree - I have been using it in my dog beds and I had two vets that told me that studies have shown that dogs don't like the smell of cedar!!! BUMMER!
I have four hens. We put one rounded roost in the hen house and two in the run. We should have put an extra roost in the house (we did later, in -15 F weather). Having a way to raise the food and water prevents a lot of spillage, too. My feeder and waterer are both pretty high so that they...
After all my endless discussions online and fretting, we have succumbed to the heat lamp. I have only used it a couple of times but will use in on Sunday night. The roof of my coop is open, but there have been times that no matter how open the hen house is - the humidity is in the 70-80% and...
Fire freaks me out. But I put in a lamp. I've only turned it on once so far this winter. Only when the coop gets lower than 10 F. And the lamp, attachment and chord will be inspected each time. (I also don't get much sleep). I don't want to loose them to fire or freezing. There has to be...
I think it's fine to not heat your coops. There seems to be too much risk of fire with heating. I am not "really" heating my coop. Disclaimer - this is my first winter and I'm new to all of this.
When I think about the pioneers, or my grandfather and his family on the frigid prairie of...
We have a wireless unit in our hen house, too. It reads the hen house temp and humidity and I can read it from my nightstand. If I want to compare it to actual outside temps, I just use my weather apps on my phone or computer.
Here is what I bought:
AcuRite 00611A3 Wireless Indoor/Outdoor...
