Introducing two new chickens to my flock

I had 4 hens, and one of them recently passed away for an unknown reason. I was going to get a few more next spring, but I have family in Arkansas which have many chickens. They are offering to send 2 hens home with my grandparents, and they are constantly free-ranged there. I live in MN and...

First egg!! And no more two days later...

I just got my first egg from my rhode island red on Saturday at about 2:00pm, so I was expecting one by at least 5:00pm yesterday. Now it is Monday at 6:30pm and still haven't gotten a 2nd egg ?? The only reason I thought of was that she didn't get enough calcium in her grower/starter feed ?

Only three of four hens roosting at night...

I have four hens, which are just starting to lay eggs. One of them, which is at the bottom of the pecking order, sleeps on the floor of the coop every night. We have a run attached to our coop, and we close the run door, but not the coop door. Would that be why she sleeps there ? (There is...

Creating a daily, weekly, monthly, and annual schedule for new chicken owners

I am new to chicken raising, and I thought it would be cool to create a schedule for things that you need to do daily, weekly, monthly, and annually. It would be very helpful for both me and all other new chicken raisers. I also thought you guys could just post some things to put on it and if it...

Planning on just using the dirt that was there for the run, but it is constantly muddy

I just built their coop, and we moved it to the spot we wanted it. This is almost the lowest spot in the yard, and we live near a pondy/marshy area. I was wondering if there is any way to dry it out to let them dust bathe and prevent some diseases ?

    sand for baby chick grit

I just got 4 baby chicks that are all less than a week old. They have pine shavings in their brooder, but I am going to put rough sand in their future coop. Is it okay to boil some sand from outside for their temporary grit ?
