A neighbor saw something like a ferret

I did put them back into the run. I also am looking at possible weak areas in the wire and shoring up. I have had two die in the run, one on free range. But I have checked the perimeter of the run and shored it up. We intend to shoot the offender!

A neighbor saw something like a ferret

I found no evidence of the chicks. I haven't seen hawks, but there is a nice pine tree in the neighbors yard that could easily have some. Three years ago many hawks were in the tree. If it's hawks, what is a good deterrent, short of putting wire over the run?

    Skunk in my coop!

Thanks, Ridgerunner. We had a problem with coons and lost some when the coon dug up into the locked coop several years ago. In response, we built a secure coop and run. The new run is adjacent to our garden, so I fenced in a middle section for them, and will eventually allow the chickens to...

    Skunk in my coop!

Hi! Last night I went into my coop after dark to collect the eggs, feed, water, etc. I shined the flashlight to find some eggs and a skunk was inside grabbing eggs. I kept the light on the skunk and it walked away. I locked the doors, and collected eggs. I looked under the coop a bit later...

    Some new girls.

We bought 11 hens from a family. They are great layers! We’re wanting to increase our flock this spring, so would love to buy good layers, and these might be the variety. Thanks for the help.

    What are these girls?

We lost some of our sweet hens to our dogs. Yes, I forgot to latch the gate. We bought 11 new girls and they are wonderful layers. We’d like to buy some chicks, so am asking what breed they are. Thank you!

    Moving chickens daily

Hi, I have 17 hens and one rooster that are in a small field of 3000' sq ft. They share with two small goats and a ewe lamb. We have a large garden area that I just finished fencing and want to move the chickens to the garden so they can munch, till, and fertilize before planting. My coop...

    Dead chick mystery. Please help!

Yes they were all feathered in and quite healthy> The weather was not cold that day, just extremely blustery with wind gusts up to the 40 mph's. The only other variable that I can think of is I fed them some thawed out rhubarb. My wife had it in the fridge for about a week then was going to...

Hmm. No, the wind blew increadibly hard that day, but I only needed a sweatshirt. Could high blustery winds kill them?

Two questions related by death of first flock

Thank you. Unfortunately, we haven't been able to determine the predator. Maybe some raccoons, but we set a trap and no takers.

Two questions related by death of first flock

I lost 13 chicks to a predator about the same time we lost two kittens. The kittens just disappeared but the 2 mo old chicks were left dead under the coop or nearby. We have one girl left from that batch that is getting pretty big. She is almost 4 mo old now. I have made a new coop which is...
