Do chickens stop laying eggs as they grow old ?

My 2 BSL's just celebrated their 7th birthday. I haven't seen an egg in 5 months. There are lots of feathers in their coop. I think maybe last year was there final laying year. The last cycle we got 94 eggs from Feb. 1st till July 1. So either they are on strike or done laying. We have 2 "pets".

Adding two hens to my flock of 8

I have 2, six year old BSL's and am planning to add 2, six month old chickens to the coop. My old girls have been together since birth, and I am sure they are set it their ways. My fear is that there will be fighting as outlined in this thread. I have set up a fence and a small coop in the run...

    Chickens stopped laying

I have 2 BSL's and for the past 3 years they were pretty good layers , however about 2 months ago one of them stopped laying and 4 days (and 4 eggs later) they both stopped. I am still feeding them Layena but nothing is happening. They are molting a little and there are some black feathers...

What are your favorite chicken treats and why?

My girls like just about any fruit and vegetables, but I don't give them cruciferous vegetables. Someone told me that cabbage , Brussels sprouts, broccoli and etc. are not good for chickens. In the hot summer I give them mixed vegetables frozen into an ice block.

Chickens won't stop squawking loudly for no apparent reason

posted to this "loud chickens" discussion before, and as the "girls" get older their outbursts have lessened in intensity and duration. However they still do cause a ruckus occasionally. Especially when one is in the nesting box the other one crows incessantly for 15-20 minutes. I still have to...

Comment by 'Flachickman' in article 'Crow - Chicken Pests - How To Protect Your Chickens From Crows'

I have 2 mature chickens and the nesting box is out of harms way. There are 2 crows that sit in the trees around the coop taunt my chickens who squawk continuously until they sound hoarse . I spray the crows with the hose but the just go farther out of reach . but come back to annoy the...

    Broken Eggs

My 2 BLS's are about 2 1/2 and aside of a 6 week laps in laying (molting) they are good producers of 2.5 0z. eggs . That being said last week I found one egg with a hole at the pointy end, today I found one smashed in the nesting box and one with a hole in the pointy end. I have hay in the box...

    pooping in nesting box

My 2 " girls" are 2 years old and are in their second molt. All of a sudden instead of eggs in the nesting box ,every day I find a fresh pile of poop. It's like they're defying me. I guess I could block the entrance to the box till they got back to laying. It has been 4 weeks. I actually had to...

best time to buy baby chicks

I bought my 10 week old BSL's on Jan. 2nd, and the first egg came on April 13th. My girls were about 23 weeks old. I live in (hot) central Florida. This worked out fine for me and my BSL's

Chickens won't stop squawking loudly for no apparent reason

Hi all, my 2 BSL's have completed their first year of laying and the average egg is 2.5 oz. I am very pleased ....that being said ,they squawk like the were parrots, or crows or a combination of both and it sometimes goes on for 30 minutes or more. As previous contributors have said, when I...

    Thin shelled eggs

WOW ! didn't know that. I've got 2 birds, one went into molt and the other didn't, so I let them eat the same as always. Live and learn. So do you thing this weak egg thing is only temporary?

    Thin shelled eggs

I never changed their feed during the molt, same lay mixture they've been eating since they started laying in April.

    Thin shelled eggs

One of my BSL just came back after 4-5 weeks of molting and two eggs in two days have cracks and actually a small opening at the pointy end of the egg. My wife said we'd better not eat it, so we threw them away. Is this a result of the molt?

Comment by 'Flachickman' in item 'Black Sex Link chicken'

I've got 2 BSL's and they are fluffy and their feathers make them look fat(they are not) Very friendly , but very outspoken and loud. Good egg layers Except this month, their production is way down, 14 eggs in 17 days. The heat(90's) may be a factor.

How to Break a Broody Hen

One of my BSL's is not "paying" her way ,she is the same one who goes broody every 3 weeks or so. She hasn't laid an egg in 10 days. When she goes broody I isolate her in the chicken tractor that I built, and after 3 days she is back to "normal" It is quite hot here in Fl. (90's every day)...

My 2 Hens stopped laying after 3 months and 120 eggs,

It is hot here in Florida this time of the year, would this cause a halt in egg production?

How to Break a Broody Hen

I'm not a chicken expert but according to the info that I read, that would be counterproductive, if she goes back and starts brooding you are back where you started. You may get other replies that will be different. Good luck
