I am curious about this too.
My Flock of Four has started to slow down - older 3 are now 5yo and I'm pretty sure the "baby" (3yo mutt) has ended her laying career.
I am getting an egg a day & not every day.
So.........
Next week I am getting some adult hens from a friend's son who has a huge...
Hey there, Big Mike!
I'm thinking this recipe is a lot "plainer" than your usual creations & thus the lack of interest.
Sounds good to me and I suggest trying it using quinoa or another grain too.
I have green & wax beans planted & will probably use them in something like this.
Murphy's Law of Poultry:
The more you don't want your chickens to like you, the more they will
IIWM, I'd just resign myself to the fact that any critter living with me is a pet & look for some home-raised meat birds elsewhere.
I've had "volunteer" barncats too.
One little intact male who was so well-behaved I thought it was a spayed female - no spraying in the year he stayed & no bothering my resident female barncat. He showed up for food often enough so I got him his own bowl, but never allowed me to touch him except...
Yay!
I predict you too will become an Egg Snob.
Once you compare your "homemade" eggs to those served in restaurants you will pass on ordering eggs.
And once you start cooking with your eggs a whole new world opens up.
I remember making a recipe a friend had served me using my eggs and the first...
My hens get a "breakfast" of cooked oatmeal (rolled oats) every morning along with their regular feed.
I add plain yogurt and (when I have a surplus) a couple of their eggs - with shells - mixed in.
All of it has extra protein and calcium.
For 4 hens I use about 1 cup of oats, 1 tablespoon...
Turns out the predator was a red fox.
I've been keeping the survivors penned and last Saturday while I was working in my barn I heard the hens squawking - looked out to see the fox staring into the fenced henyard. If he was a bird dog he would have won a prize...
So now the hens will stay in...
First off, Bless you & MFB for saving this guy from a lousy situation.
As for his costs: would your vet take payments?
I paid off an $1800 colic surgery back in the 90s in installments - it was the only way I could afford it (never regretted it either)
I've read through all 11 pages ofthis...
I finally tried the recipe for apple dumplings that uses Mountain Dew & refrigerated crescent roll dough.
Not sure you really need the soda - it doesn't seem to add anything to the recipe.
Maybe sub orange juice instead?
Anyhow, they came out good and were not soggy on Day #2.
I used a small...
I have 5ac, so no, not perimeter-fenced.
Just the pastures - which would not keep a dog out, but my pony would probably take care of that.
I am going to ask my neighbors who have dogs if their dogs have noticed anyhting - maybe barking at loose dogs?
We all work days - only stay-at-home is...
Thanks for the sympathetic responses.
In the cold light of day I am leaning toward loose dog - I read the BYC Predator thread you linked to Relearning, and I am soooo sorry to hear you lost your turkeys.
At least I know what happened and my girls & rooster died pretty quickly, I did not have...
I came home to carnage yesterday.
Left my little freerange flock as usual around 9A, got home at 6P anf they did not come running at the sound of my car,as is their habit, to mug me for treats.
Just one hen in the backyard, and a huge pile of downy feathers - from the color I knew they...

Even if you don't make the shortbread - the rhubarb curd is good enouhg to eat with a spoon!
This cake is easy and tasty too:

Not all poisons are anti-coagulants, some of the newer ones are neurotoxins and that is by no means a "peaceful" death.
Both are also toxic to any animal that consumes them either primary or secondary as the warning labels state.
But you need to pick your battles and I pick poisoning the rats...
Mmmmmmmmmm : 9
I think I drooled a little just reading that recipe. I am always looking for new things to grill & ideas for using chicken breasts.
This filled both requirements & I'll be trying it soon!
Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm : 9
Sounds great.
I especially like the easy crust recipe - I hate fiddling with pastry.
I don't have a family syrup source, but I do get my maple syrup from a County park that taps their own trees and has a wood-fired sugar shack onsite.
The syrup is just a little smoky and so...
Hey Big M! Glad to see you posting again, just in time for this unseasonal warm Spring we're having here in the Midwest : D
No smoker here @ 2 Dogs Farm, but I imagine I can work something out on my gas grill.
Those ribs look A-mazing : 9
And for your mac salad: Guess what I just discovered...
If the chard is young leaves I use them in salads.
Older greens - chard, kale, collards - I saute with garlic in olive oil until tender then serve over pasta.
I've also added the greens to spaghetti sauce and meatloaf.
My small flock (6 hens, 1 rooster) was pretty much on Lockdown all Summer since they decided crossing the road (yes, I know, bad joke...) to visit the neighbors was okay.
It was not.
The neighbors objected to the the hens' "landscaping" efforts and my heart stopped thinking of them crossing the...
