I didn't think my girls would need a covered run until the rain came this fall/winter. My husband put a temporary roof on that helped a lot. He's redoing it this summer, so it has a good pitch to let the rain run off. Having it covered makes a HUGE difference.

Blue Laced & Black AS Orpington Hen

I have a 10 mo. old Blue Laced & Black Orpington hen who needs to join a new flock. She is laying large, medium brown eggs and is very healthy. She is from a NPIP P/T, AI, MG and MS certified farm and has not been free ranged. She is mid level in the pecking order and picks on my lowest...

I use wood chips and fir nuggets. Sometimes you can get the wood chips for free, but I get mine at the same place I get the fir nuggets. It is not expensive. The base of the run is river silt and has good drainage. The wood material eventually starts to break down, but has lasted a very long...

Feed for laying and not yet laying pullets

Thank you! So, if I get feed that is labeled "layer" it would have less protien and more calcium? Would it be better to switch to that once I've used up this bag? By then all of them should be laying.

Feed for laying and not yet laying pullets

Can I use Start & Grow for laying pullets by adding some kind of protein? I have 2 out of 7 pullets laying now. Expectng a couple more might start laying before too long. As soon as the first one started laying I put out oyster shell. It gets eaten up right away. Question is about feed. I have a...

We are in the process of covering all of our 16x8 run. I can't wait! The part of the run that isn't covered now doesn't get used at all in the rain. The base of the run is river silt and on top is a layer of wood chips and fir nuggets. So far that has been working. It decomposes over time...

Great idea Java! Meetups would be the perfect place to start a group. I know there is a BYC member who lives only about a mile from me.

I live in South Salem. I have 4 (20 wk. old) Blue and Black Laced American Standard Orpington pullets and 3 (17 wk. old) Gold Laced English Orpington pullets. Seems I learn something new about chicken keeping almost everyday.

    Blue Laced & Black Orpingtons

Sorry, I forgot to put sold on this ad. Five of the boys went to a gentleman with a large flock and he wanted roosters from the same hatch that would get along better. The beautiful blue laced went to a college student who has competed with his birds in 4H and involved in FFA. Even though the...

Hi sktlmt, I just rehomed 6 black & blue laced Orpington cockerels. It tool a while. They were all from the same hatch and 5 of them went to tend a big flock in a rural area. The luckiest went to a young man and his mom who have a small flock. It isn't so easy finding homes for the boys. You...

Fantastic idea Meowoui. Thank you! We have a tree nursery, so usually have pvc. We have a styro cooler and I've been freezing milk jugs of water to put in their hanging water bucket. I'll see if I can recruit my husband to help me with this.

Hi Aggiemae, I live not far from you I'd guess. We are on Battle Creek south of Kuebler. About 6 mo. ago we had wild turkeys wander through our place. We get the other critters too. There is a cougar that passes through, but not often that we see. Neighbors usually notify one another if they see...

10 week old Blue Laced and Black AS Orpington Cockerels

I have sold and rehomed all of the cockerels! I am so happy!!! One of the birds has a new home with a young man who grew up showing animals and being very involved in 4H and FFA. The cockerel he chose will tend his flock of 12 hens. They free range in the afternoon, get treats and there isn't a...
