What are the symptoms?

Wilma seemed fine earlier today, but this evening she has yolk coming out of her messy vent and she doesn't seem to feel well. She didn't come out for treats! She's laid soft shells before; do you suppose one broke inside her and can that harm her? Is there something I can do for her?

She's about nine months old. Just started laying in early December. Yesterday's egg was a tad over 2 ounces. Today's weighed 3.5 ounces! I've been crushing eggshell and mixing in with scraps. Wilma loves it- gobbles it up like candy. Maybe she's getting too much?

Wow! I was surprised to see Wilma's jumbo egg this morning. Is it common for size to vary that much from day to day?

By the way, Betty laid her first egg on December first and gives us an egg almost every day. Wilma's green eggs are harder to come by. She laid some without shells or with soft shells for a week or more, but she's back to hard shells now, 2 days in a row.

It was a big ol' lump of poo that kept getting bigger. Not sure if it was wet; it was hard to see and I wore latex gloves. I'll keep an eye out for signs of gleet. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to give some yogurt, either way. I've never heard of fermented feed- is it something you buy or make...

Betty has a bad case of dingleberry. I was hoping that would self-correct, but it hasn't so maybe I should give her a bath. Ugh! It's freezing out, so I suppose she'll need a blow-dry too. Any helpful hints?

Good luck! I wonder when I should let mine stay out all night. I've had them 7 weeks. They're in the coop/yard during the day, but I've been bringing them into the garage cage at night. Outside temps are in the 40s at night; in the garage only gets down to 60. They're fully feathered, I think.

The grit I have is very coarse and it says on the bag the chicks should be at least 10 weeks old. I was thinking about using a hammer to make the grit a little smaller and easier to swallow. Maybe I should keep the bread treat to minimum? We had our first chicken emergency today when poor...
