Thanks for the reply. Shadow is now 7wks old and I think is a really dark blue like you suggested. Almost black but I can see some darker edges to her feathers.
I would never raise chicks any other way than under Mama heating pad. I got fall chicks this year and had them under mama hp from day one. Idaho is cold in the fall and they are now 7 wks old and sleeping on top of mama. The temps are in the 20s F at night.
My oldest is 9.5 yrs. She is an olive egger and the last survivor from my original flock. This fall I got 9 chicks and for the first time she has gone broody with these chicks, hanging around Outside their enclosure and making the broody sounds at them. I got a few eggs from her this spring.
I’m going to quickly hijack this post for a quick answer. I purchased a SG chick from feed store. I’ve had them before. I picked the darkest chick with blackish legs. She is now 4 wks old and feathering in all black. All the chicks looked basically the same and we’re labeled SG pullets. Is all...
I got this chick out of the rare breed/colored egg layer bin. I think from Hoover. Now 10 weeks old. I'm thinking maybe Midnight Majesty. This chick has always been larger than the rest and has heavy feathering on legs. Comb and wattles are not as red as in the pics. What do you think...cockeral...
I have a 2 yr old white SF Cochin hen. She had normal flat feathers until her first molt at 18 mos. her feathers grew back frizzled. How is this possible?
Thanks. The woman did have Plymouth Rock as one of the breeds. Perhaps a penciled rock mix. Doesn’t really matter. She’s a nice bird even if she’s a mutt.
I purchased hatching eggs from someone who said she had breeds of chickens not just barnyards. I picked eggs out of a mixed basket. I don't really care but I did get a buff Orpington, a black australorp, a white leghorn, a dark barnevelder ( I think), and this one. Anyone have any guesses as to...
This is Bug. Very pretty chick. Hoping for a pullet but don't know. Very slow to feather. Legs seem sort of thickish. Very shy. The other chicks have always picked on this one. 6 wks old. Supposed to be a Barnevelder but with willow legs I'm thinking a mix. Any ideas on sexing Bug?
Unfortunately some chickens and breeds are louder than others. My speckled Sussex drives me nuts with her cackling in the morning. Wish I could offer some suggestions.
Thanks everyone. These are shipped eggs so they've been through a lot anyway. I set them and don't turn them for the first 4 days (I don't have a turner, all by hand). The second batch was not expected for several more days so I was quite surprised when they showed up the next day. I will take...
I put eggs in the bator 1 day apart. Not the brightest thing to do, I know. Will my 17day eggs be okay on lockdown with my 18day eggs? Not that I have a choice, but I just wanted to know. Thanks

Here's a repost. Don't know why I'm having trouble. The dark chick is a LF Blue Cochin. I had only 2 eggs hatch out of 6 shipped eggs that made it to lockdown. Boo! But I have more hatches over the next few weeks. I put my 1 day old and 14 hr old under mama with the 3 farm store chicks...
I'm glad I read about 6 probably being too high indoors. The room they are in is only about 58F and I had it on 6. I saw signs of pasty butt in 1 chick. I've got it down to 5 now after cleaning the chick up. I think I'll go down to 4 and see how they act. They stayed under a lot, even at 6. I...
