Yes, that makes sense. Genetics are fascinating, and I love watching these barnyard mutts grow up. You never know what you're going to get, but I sure never expected white chicks.
Hmmm... The roos in my friend's flock are RIR and RIR Barred Rock cross. I don't see how these could be carriers of a white gene, unless there was some other mixing along the way; which could very well be the case.
My broody hen just hatched four chicks, and two of them are a very pale yellow. They look like they will grow up to be white chickens, but the friend who I got the eggs from does not have any white or light chickens. Could a recessive gene from a "golden comet" show up with a white chick? Has...
My chicks are 11 weeks old, and have been living in their coop since they were 6 weeks. I had a small perch for them in the brooder box, and the would occasionally roost on that, but now they have no interest in roosting at night. Instead they all clamor to be in one corner of the coop; pushing...
Thanks for the pics. She doesn't look like that body type, so yay! I don't really care what she is as long as she's healthy and lays pretty well. Although I do think it's fun to guess.
My dd says they are the same color as an egg yolk that has boiled too long; so yes, a moldy mucky yellow is right. :)
She is not as big as she appears in the picture, but she is the biggest one. Even a little bit bigger than the BO RIR mixes that I have.
Thanks for all of your replies. Cornish x did cross my mind because she is so big and greedy, but I am glad to hear that the green legs rule that out. Here is a picture of her. Her legs have become less gray than they were.
Because she is very bold and curious, she has become my favorite.
I've put the waterer on a cement block, and that has helped, but I think I am going to order some chicken nipples. I worry about them not having clean water. Has anyone used poultry cups?
I started out with one of those screw on quart jar waterers, set up on a block of wood, and I didn't have any mess. How ever, as they have gotten bigger (I have twelve 3 1/2 week chicks) I would have to refill it several times a day. So I switched to a 3 gl. waterer, but it's not working out...
I recently got a couple of chicks from TSC, labeled "layer pullets". They were right next to a bin labeled Amberlinks, and they looked just like the Amberlinks, except they were younger. I assumed that they were Amberlinks until one of the chicks legs changed color. She went from having pinkish...
Hi, I am new to BYC and to chickens in general. I have wanted chickens for years but never seriously pursued getting them until I volunteered to take some that were hatched as part of a school project. I now have 12 nearly 3 week old chicks, and am eagerly awaiting to see how many hens we end...
