We have a bantam roo who is only mean towards my wife. He never approaches me.
She has picked him up, forcing love is what she calls it. We've even tried carrying him by his feet in front of the girls.
If she sees him coming, she will kick at him. One time even sending him flying down the hill...
Mine would not eat the oyster shell I was putting out, so we started giving them feed that had extra calcium in it. So far, we haven't had a problem, that I know of. Even got a big one yesterday that will most likely have double yolks.
How old is he/she? Our girls were very slow to develope wattles and combs while the roos developed quickly. Is the bird showing any signs of aggresion? That was another give away for us. Then of course, he started crowing...
It is 8 pm here in NC and I just went out to check food and water when we noticed one of the hens was out of the coop and just standing there. They usually pace back and forth when they hear us coming because they know we are bringing them a treat.
Anyway, as I approached the coop, I noticed she...
I've been reading on here about the quantity of eggs that hens will lay, but what about the location? Today I got three eggs from my three hens. But all three eggs were in the same laying box. Is this normal? I've read that sometimes a chicken will lay more than one egg, but will they squat over...
When do you think they will become a problem? Especially for the hens? I did read about the 10:1 ratio but I'm not really ready to get rid of anybody just yet. Having too much fun with them. Plus, when I do get rid of them, I want to replace them and I read somewhere that chicks and adults don't...
Okay, I have 6 roos and 3 hens. What the heck should I do? They are 13 weeks old, so they aren't actually fighting, but they do challenge each other. Setting the pecking order type of fighting. But right now, they are still too young to actually cause any harm...
Ours are getting to the stage (13 weeks) where they will eat almost anything we give them. But they are especially fond of watermelon, cantaloupe, tomatoes, and their absolute favorite, mealworms. We used to get them from the local bait and tackle shop but that was getting expensive. We have...
I hope I'm beating this subject to death, but after searching, I couldn't find the answer I was looking for.
Are larger combs and wattles a sure sign of roos?
I have 7 red sex links (12 weeks old) which we bought as RIR's, and 2 red stars (13 weeks old.) Of the 9 birds, 6 have large combs...
This is one of my eight week old RIR (as purchased.) Although I'm starting to believe they are Red Sex Links based on what I learned at the local Tractor Supply.
My six week old RIR's are not too quick to try new things. They love live meal worms, but not so much the dried ones. Although they are starting to come around. They are just starting to like cracked corn too. But not the big pieces. When we put watermelon out, they wouldn't touch it...
