Good luck with your hen Krista. I'm pretty new to the chicken thing...so take any advice I offer with caution. Like I mentioned, in this case it worked great...next time who knows!
I recently had a broody hen, nothing seemed to break her. I decided to bring her inside the house for an hour or so. The kids played with her and held her. She also ate and drank while inside as well, where previously she had no interest. Maybe a radical change of environments was all she...
Living in extreme Northern, WI. We aren't always able to collect eggs in a timely fashion or set schedule (4 young kids). How long can an egg stay in a coop averaging 25 degrees to 35 degrees and still be consumable? We collect them daily but some do wind up sitting in the coop till later in...
iwiw60,
My "hen house" is about 3' wide x 3-4' high (sloped roof) x 6' long. The house is actually self contained inside one of our garages. We cut a "pop door" into the garage so they an access the outside run.

Hi,
I have a Golden Comet (Red Sex Link), Buff Orpington, Barred Rock and A Rhode Island Red. The Rhode Island Red's feathers seem to almost glisten with a greasy look to them. Anyone else notice this?
Thanks,
Brad
Hi Angie, sorry about not posting sooner. I decided to stay with our local feed mill chicken feed after a trial of the Walmart stuff. The difference in quality is night and day.
On another note I am a fellow Wisconsin resident myself.
Thanks
Thanks for all the great information guys and gals! I'm going to keep a closer eye on them to see if I can figure out who rules the roost. If things stay as they are I have no complaints. They all seem to be doing well.
Thanks Sunflour! On a different but semi-related note...are there any breeds that tend to be more dominant than others? Currently we have a Buff Orpingnton, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Rhode Island Red, Golden Comet and a Barred Rock.
Thanks
