Orust Hona chicks hatching today!
Reputation - Bright, inquisitive, great cold-hardy foragers - and eventually, SPECKLED LEGS!!
Can't wait to pull them out of the incubator.
Dowgirl, Ledge Field Farm in Palermo had chicks earlier in the spring. They are on Facebook, too. Very nice people. We got our Lavender orps from them this year.
Blueseal in Windham had some last I was there... Metcalfs in Cornish did last year...going there today...will let you know if they have anything there. Andy's Agway in Biddeford/Saco had a few nice ones last year...couldn't say now though. And Lastly Craigslist has quite a few.
Before you order, please consider that each bird needs about 4 SQFT to not feel crowded indoors. If you're not free ranging that is the absolute minimum I would suggest. More would be better considering our long winters. Outdoor run space is around 6 SQFT per bird. If you plug these numbers...
Oh we really wanted bees this summer but there's too many other projects in the air that need attention this spring / summer. Money, time and skill never seem to meet at the right place...we usually lack one of the three! Lol
Hope everyone had a good weekend. We did some spring cleaning which of course led to thoughts of spring itself and hatching chicks. We have 2 brooders going already!
I thought it might be helpful to post a list of who's hatching what, where and when so we can buy / sell / swap chicks close...
We had a couple rats this past fall. We laid out traps and they just ignored them.. peanut butter, meat, cheese... nothing worked. We were talking about it with a friend and he gave us his brother's perfect rat recipe. 1 tootsie roll and 1 starburst candy (we have used the orange and yellow)...
Anyone wanting some chicken-themed holiday presents? I just found (and bought) a beautiful handmade stuffed hen from a very sweet lady that makes and sells them on Etsy. Here's the link to her store:
The Chicken Jungle
There's even a sale going on for 25% off through today, I think...
I know we'd try and make it. Catching up with all the replies here is my Sunday morning pre-alarm ritual. I look forward to reading everyone's adventures in chicken wrangling. My coworkers already think of me as the crazy chicken lady. It would be fun to meet in person. Maybe a potluck or...
Porcupine update: no sign of him. Thanks for the suggestions LG & SCG
The dogs have been earning their keep doing their business all around the garden perimeter and along the path my intruder's taking from the treeline. With 3 dogs, urine and poop is in no short supply! With any luck, that...
For the past few weeks, the garden's been under attack. Mostly broccoli but more recently, the melons. Suspected deer but the game cam caught nothing. Well, tonight we finally saw the bugger next to the garden while locking down the chickens. A porcupine! Sassy little thing just waddled off...
So sorry, CoopChick, what a horrible thing to come home to, especially when you're sick.
I started seeds in the kitchen that have sprouted fast, too fast. My first year planting is teaching me a lot. I need to buy some bigger planters to switch them over to before they can go outdoors.
We have 4...
To Coopchick719 and Dodochick92, so sorry for your losses. Terrible thing to lose such characters.
I know I need to be patient, but there are so many warm weather projects I need to start, I can't hardly stand it! Top priorities: expand the chicken runs/ coop and build a fence for the dogs...
Widget, thanks for the Coursera info. I'd never heard of Coursera. I signed up for the course and a couple of others, too. It's exciting to see all the new chick plans here. As much as we'd like to bring in a few more, I think we need to expand our outdoor runs a bit more first so they have a...
It's been awhile...I hope everyone had a great Christmas and is gearing up for the New Year. We've had some exciting developments here on our end, but before I go into that, I wanted to share something with you folks that I found for the Christmas tree this year. We were fortunate enough to...
