Anyone wanting some chicken-themed holiday presents? I just found (and bought) a beautiful handmade stuffed hen from a very sweet lady that makes and sells them on Etsy. Here's the link to her store:

The Chicken Jungle

There's even a sale going on for 25% off through today, I think...

How long do you think she should be in the cage in the coop before she can be let out with the other 10? I know they will still going through their pecking order squabbles but I don't think it will be as bad with them seeing her in the coop. She won't have access to the outside but she hasn't in the house. Still wheezing some when she gets wound up. But don't sound bad. If she starts acting sick again soon she will be culled.

Lots of illness going round. My Mum came down with the flu Thanksgiving Day. I got the call to come help with dinner! Thankfully, she had already put the bird in the oven. It was truly a team effort getting dinner on the table--me, DD, son's GF & my dad. Dad--God love him--just kept doing dishes as we cooked.

My girls have had 2 turkey carcasses. We do "Worksgiving" at the office. My boss cooks the turkey. As we were cleaning up, he says, "I suppose you want the carcass for the girls?" He's a good guy--grew up on a dairy farm. So they got anything that we were throwing away. Again, people were amazed that I fed them turkey. I said turkey & chicken are 2 of their favorite foods.

Love those eggs, bucka!!

Miss Kitty (a neighbor cat) comes to hunt the rats every night. I don't know if she gets anything but I've been leaving the play yard gate open for her. I'm going to leave a little feed out there to see if I can lure the rats her way. I'm taking all food & water in at night. Hoping to starve the little *&(%$#@ rats! Snapped my hand in a trap the other night. Thankfully I had gloves on so only a small bruise.

diana507--Good Luck with your girl! I agree with SCG on returning her to the flock. Lots of treats and distractions! They're like 2 year olds :) And put her on the roost under the cover of darkness. That has always worked well for me.

I scored a wheelbarrow full of pumpkins!! On my way to work, there was a shop that had filled their window boxes with all sizes. I had been meaning to stop & ask them what they were going to do with them after Halloween. They put up their Christmas decorations and put a Free tag on all the pumpkins. Woohoo!!

Anyone have a recommendation for a good, bright headlamp? I was asking my dad about one. He said "Whadda ya want...a miner's helmet?" I said, YES!!
Sorry you've been dealing with illness. Same here. So far, GD, GS, and Hubby. Good to have a cat that will hunt rats. That snap must have hurt... a lot! Are you having any luck with a snap trap? Good score on the pumpkins. I have 2 big field pumpkins. Gave them the first one a few days ago, and they are carving it into a grotesque figure! Head lamp: hubby and I were at Lowes the other day, looking for a replacement one for me. Mine keeps quitting on me. Agreed that a red light is a must for our uses. However, of the ones that we saw, only the lower powered one had the red lamp. But, it's adequate if the bateries are fresh.

Any Mainers have any fertile eggs you'd be willing to sell? I'd like to hatch some chicks over New Years. Kids get a thrill out of it on winter break, and so do I. I'm located in Durham, willing to travel to get them.

Their ventilation is good. I did block off the front eves for winter last weekend. But the whole top above the roost is open and also smaller sections on the sides. She's moving out today to the coop with the big girls in a pen. She still has a slight wheeze but is rambunctious as hell! Here's her new pad for a bit.
