The kids finally got a potentially great breeding pair of BCM. the Pullet took Grand Champion at the 2010 Licking County Fair in Breeding/Egg Layer class. The Cockerel took 2nd Place in...
It is slow. This is day 5 of our hatch. One on day 19, two on day 20, two on day 21, four on day 22, and this morning one was drying and two more unzipping. Yes humidity should be higher 65% - 70% on the last three days of incubation and through the final hatch. Risking sticky chick if humidity...
CO poisoning: Quiet, painless, lethal, relatively fast. 1 large cardboard box with a lid or flaps that will close easily, section of dryer exhaust flex pipe. cut a tight fitting hole in box, insert one end of dryer vent flex pipe and the other end slide onto automobile exhaust pipe. The birds...
In August one of our Golden Comets, Reba, developed a prolapsed vent. She has carried it around for several months now still laying and eating and ranging with the others. Just last night while she was perched I noticed she had dry tail feathers. Sure enough the prolapse was back inside. No...
Don't know about Agrimaster. Online price comparison with Layena is about $1.49 less than Layena. I guess if you go through 50lb bags weekly the savings would add up. I only use about 85 lbs a month so I don't mind using the Purina product that has always worked for me.
Good idea!

I can just about GUARANTEE this is NOT a good idea.
ETA regardless of your intentions, if you show up on your neighbor's doorstep with gun in hand, he and any member of his family can press charges against you for harassment or intimidation, and depending upon your state's...
Trying to raise chickens is a tough business when trying to please neighbors. Unless everyone has chickens or something along that line then no one will be happy. The chicken issue is just more fuel for bad relations between neighbors. When dogs get involved poor situations escalate to bad. If a...
Oh I agree with you all the way. This will make their 3rd dog in 9 years. The first female ran away (smart dog), the last dog was "put down" because the neighbors new chickens & goats (not referring to us) made him a mean and vicious animal. This Idiot neighbor is so deluded. He told me when we...
You are very lucky to have responsible pet owners like your neighbors. Yesterday we had another issue with our neighbor's dog. She breaks out of her kennel and chases and scatters our flock. Aside from missing tail feathers, No casualties, but it is just a matter of time before we loose one or...
Craigslist for typical chain link yard fence. By using cheap / used chain link for 80% of the run then you can spend the money on hardware cloth for the bottom 18" ground up. The hardware cloth is a necessity to keep your birds heads inside and predators hands out. If you want to avoid the cost...
Chickens create alot of manure. Not to mention the shavings or bedding that tends to scatter. Chicken coops/pens/cages need ventilation. Outside is best for large breeds. Maybe a bantam variety in small numbers would work inside, but then the eggs would be relatively small for consumption.
That's going to be a tough one, you want to cull any roos that make it into your flock to eliminate the majority of the noise. For the most part hens don't say too much. Maybe a when they get stirred up by way of harassment they might audibly let you know they aren't pleased, but it passes quickly.
