Something I have heard of people doing is putting food safe dye (Not red) on their vents, a few at a time until you come across eggs with that streak of color. Then you know which bird laid which egg.
Without seeing a picture, and just trying to visualize what you are describing: Your chick is starting to "feather out" and the fluff will slowly start turning into feathers.
The suspect red color is kind of rusty. Here is my 9 week old cockerel, with the red:
But I will tell you the splotchy coloring of that chicken makes it likely to be a cockerel. How old is it?
That blue looks like a girl at the moment, but if that comb pinks up then I would say boy. But the others you think are Cockerals look like it with that red coming on their wings.
That is why we are up here too! BUT mine wants to retire here, and made that choice before even getting her. We are originally from Kansas, so the adjustment to ne thunderstorms and wind is hard... along with the no daylight in winter/nighttime in summer.
Hey all! I just got a pair of CLB from someone around here in Alaska. They are about 8 weeks old now. I'm not sure if I will breed them or not, but I think they are great birds already. They are a little more timid than my others, but it may be because they are the newest and a little...
Hey everyone! These are my 2 Buff girls that my husband picked out. I wanted the Black Astros and he said "ahh but these have cute yellow heads" so these we got. They are super sweet, and all my friends adore their fancy feet. My daughter loves these girls as well, and named them. We have...
Hey all! I have started a flock, and my husband picked out a couple of Red Chanteclers (I know not a recognized heritage color) from the feed store up here. They are a couple of cuties, and are also very sweet. I cannot wait to learn more about the breed!
Snowflake- My daughter named her...
I just got a few Silver Laced, a couple Gold Laced, and one who knows what color (I think his wheaten EE got in with a GL gal) Cochins today. They are pretty cute, and the bigger ones joined our flock of EE, brahma, RIR, and Chanteclers with no fuss.
Roo- he needs a home, I have enough boys...
Thank you! I did miss the other half of that post. But I'm going to cross my fingers and toes that Molly and Martha are girls, but prepare my 5 year old for the fact they will most likely be going to freezer camp. The hatches up here were male dominant this year. Depending on numbers of...
Thanks for your help PolarBear! I love your name :) I'm in NP, AK! Here are all of their combs. I'll start with my Amerecaunas (however you spell it). They are around 9 weeks now:
Leonard: started to make boyish noises today
Sparkles:
EE mixes- Penny...
I do not know what she is. Is she lavender or blue? I'm not sure how to tell the difference, but she is lighter than my blue Amerecauna hen. She is BEAUTIFUL though, what color eggs is she laying?
