Willoughby, If she was not a heritage breed then two years is about right. Production breeds, especially, lay lots of eggs for just a few years and then they are done. It sounds like signs are pointing to her being through.
I don't supplement light, I feel like my hens deserve a rest. I switched to a higher protein feed during the molt and decided to continue until spring. We've added sand to our coop this year which is dryer and thus seems warmer.
I haven't had any issue with frozen eggs, I check twice a day when...
Ok Middle TN BYC friends, I could use a little help or just some advice. We have a small flock of 22 girls and 1 little boy. The boy was purely an accident. We were told that we were getting 5 Ameraucana pullets and we ended up with a cockerel. All that being said, life with our 8 month old boy...
MG, I wasn't sure if it was going to help or not since it apparently wasn't an infection that I was dealing with, but I felt desperate and she was struggling with her respiratory. I was concerned about the internal injury leading to an infection like pneumonia. After two days on it she responded...
Good morning, thanks for all the replies. I have some good news update on my injured hen. She has had two injections of tylan as of yesterday, this morning she was drinking on her own and I made her a few scrambled eggs which she gobbled up. She was vocalizing for the first time since her injury...
Kathy, I don't see any visible bruises. She ate today out of my hand after I wet the pellets and is still taking water regularly out of the dropper. She is very fiesty, she lets me know when she is done being handled. I take that as a good sign. I decided to go get some tylan and start...
Thank you Snow! I hate seeing her in pain but I don't want to prematurely cull. It's so hard to make these tough end life choices. But it's all part of responsible livestock ownership. Thanks again
I guess I should have explained myself. I believe the one that is wheezing is doing so from an injury from either falling off of the roost or flying off in the dark and hitting the wall or the nesting boxes. Her breathing was better yesterday. But this morning she seems labored again. I am...
During the night we heard a commotion in the hen house and discovered 5 of our hens and our cockerel on the ground. Everyone was apparently terrified, but after examining the area we found no external injuries nor any predator. One of the hens on the ground however was wheezing and was beginning...
We recently had to find our Roo a new home. He had gotten so aggressive that our girls were overwhelmed and stressed. He literally was running them all day. They were loosing weight and egg production had dropped plus he had broken their combs from his over aggressive behavior. He was not so...
We have a welsummer roo and one hen out of our bunch. I am seriously thinking of breeding welsummers in the future. They are very friendly birds wish we had more.
Yes Greylock, her eggs should continue to darken up and you will start seeing lovely dark brown speckles. Of course diet, and water can effect the color but I think in this case its her young age.
No other rooster, he is king lol. Although they have a huge roost I do notice that they buch up so close that I have seen him roosting standing up. I know every chicken is different in how they perch but they do crowd together.
Yesterday I noticed our rooster had something strange looking under his wings. At closer examination I realized he had missing feathers under both wings but primarily worse under one. Bless his heart, I have no idea how this happened so quickly without my being aware. Im wondering if this is...
We bought four welsummer pullets along with a mixed flock this year. This week we confirmed through his first crow that one of our she's is a he! Lol they are such sweet birds
