How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

Yep it got below 0 here in northern Utah and I checked my chickens just before sun up and they were fine. I do use the logic from the previous post made that as long as they are in a draft free, dry area, they'll be fine. Their food or water isn't in the coop they roost in and they were fine...

How cold is TOO cold for a chicken?

I always come back to this thread when I start worrying about 0 temps in Utah like tonight. I feel better now! I did lose one last weekend, pretty sure it was the cold ultimately, she wasn't up roosting with the others when I checked on her in the AM. She was following me around 2 days before...

What are these? Beak clips? Blinders?

Ok thanks. I finally found some info on them. We popped them off this morning. I'll let you know,if that was a bad idea. I've had chickens for 3 years and have never ran across these. Just when I thought I knew everything about chickens.

What are these? Beak clips? Blinders?

I swear I can't find the right term for these to google what they are so I come to you for advice. . I bought some young laying hens this week and they had these on their beaks. I assume they are for pecking issues. I've never seen these. How easy are they to remove and should we? I just...

Red Sexlink and Golden sexlink - same?

We've been raising chickens for 2 years now. Our preference has been the sexlinks by far. Our first year we bought 4 golden sexlinks from a local farmer's store. They spoiled us with fat brown eggs. The next year I bought 3 black sexlinks from the same source. They are great layers too...

    First autumn with my flock!

i couldn't wait to give my girls their first pumpkin. I put it in the pen whole to see their reaction yesterday. Today I walk out there to a chicken carved minion pumpkin smiling at me. Lol (This is my first time posting a pic, on my iPad. Hope it works.)

Sick chicken- reading a lot about crop problems. Advice appreciated!

Well the unfortunate end to this story is that we walked out this morning and she had passed away in the coop. She was moving a little slow again yesterday, so I massaged her and she seemed to be doing better last night. But her problems got the best of her overnight. We tried. It's too bad. I...

Thank you! I did a quick search and looked like that wormer is cheap and in my chicken budget! I will definitely get some for my chicken kit. Thanks for your suggestion!

Sorry to hear that. I have been wondering. For as hearty as chickens seem, some are just born fragile.

Sick chicken- reading a lot about crop problems. Advice appreciated!

Well I am still battling her swollen crop. I have quaranteened her again and had to make her vomit. She seems to gorge herself out in the coop. She is fine for days and then I see it coming back. The other day I walked out there and her crop was so big I could see it from a mile away! But she's...

Sick chicken- reading a lot about crop problems. Advice appreciated!

Mine was very bomey. She was the same size as her sexlink sisters before she got sick and now she's noticeably smaller. I still massage her crop at least once a day and she has not started laying again as far as I can tell.

Sick chicken- reading a lot about crop problems. Advice appreciated!

How old is she? I am here to tell you that mine was so lethargic and sick, I thought she would be my first casualty. Once her crop cleared, she was great 2 days later. I seriously thought she was doomed. She wouldn't stand up and the first night we realized she was Ill , she was hunkered under...

Sick chicken- reading a lot about crop problems. Advice appreciated!

That's great news! Hopefully she recovers quickly now! I went out to check on my girl and she's still doing well and is spunky. Just hoping for her to get some weight back and not have a crop problem anytime soon.

Try getting some olive oil in her system. I really think that helped my girl, along with isolation that forced her to rest.

Sorry you are going thru this too! I know there are strong opinions on vomiting your chicken as they could asprate but it seemed to be the best thing for mine. Along with isolating her in my quiet basement in a dog kennel for a few days. I didn't let her eat anything for the first day, she...
