    Unscientific sexing of Easter Eggers

Interesting! I've heard from several people that venting occurs around 3-4 weeks and is only 50% accurate. However, I don't think we have too many professional venters around here so my closest expert is Larry the chicken man. He's very knowledgeable but obviously not as much as some in your...

    Unscientific sexing of Easter Eggers

So please bear in mind that it is true you cannot "sex" chickens unless you vent and even then by the time you can tell through venting you probably have a good idea which ones are Roos. Bearing that in mind, I hav successfully guessed 4 roosters within 3 weeks of hatching. It's probably dumb...

Breed compared for the non competing noob!

I realize I am probably opening a can of worms here! However, I am curious what my fellow chicken lovers think. 4 years ago I got my very first chickens, and I knew I wanted Rhode Island reds based on my research. Of course, when I went to Feldmans I just HAD to get two Plymouth Rocks as well...

First time introducing new to old

Thanks! And happy to be here:D I'm slowly getting up my courage and spent the rainy day today sitting in the run with them all. My husband is now referring to me as the crazy chicken lady but what else is a gal to do when it's raining all day? Will post pictures once they stop hiding under my chair!

    Chicks outside??

My husband built me a box which I put in the coop, ran an extension cord and kept the heat lamp on them. A bit of a pain when cleaning the coop but it was worth not having a smelly kitchen :) here's a picture of the box

Intorducing young chickens to the rest of the flock

I was told that the starter feed can be backed off once the chicks start to eat larger things, that the small starter feed is just to help them when they are too little to eat bits of corn and regular sized layer feed. This is only me second round of new chicks so may want an expert to weigh in...

First time introducing new to old

I've only had chickens for about 2 years. My original flock consisted of 4 which through egg bound and eagle tragedy has led to my now having only 2. Which of COuRSE led me to purchase 13 new chicks this year from my local hatchery :) I had them in a separate box with a heat lamp etc until they...
