    Heat

Christmas light timers! Check the hardware section in Walmart, probably near the nightlights, extension cords, etc.

What's your record for number of chicks under a broody hen?

That's great! Wow, 26! My girl is up to 20 right now and there is still one pipping egg left in the hatcher, so we'll see if she ends up with 21. Here she is, giving me the stink-eye, lol.

What's your record for number of chicks under a broody hen?

Thank you for your reply. I suppose I should clarify - They are all safely enclosed in a 3 x 3 covered brooder with a heat lamp pointed at one side so anybody who can't fit under her can still stay warm, yet it's not so hot that she is uncomfortable, and I'm monitoring the whole situation...

What's your record for number of chicks under a broody hen?

I have a Black Copper Marans hen who has been stubbornly refusing to break her broody mood for weeks and weeks. Normally I incubate, hatch and brood chicks artificially but this hen is really starting to lose weight, so I decided to appease her and give her chicks from my current hatch. Last...

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

Thank you so much for your input. I will put together a hatchery order this weekend.

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

Awesome. Is that primarily based on comb size?

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

Thank you very much. That's exactly the info I wanted. Now at about what age can you tell the cockerels from pullets with relative certainty? (I do have plans for the cockerels, but obviously the earlier I can differentiate them the better)

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

Ah, good! So are there any noticeable or significant differences between the resulting chicks and their parents? Differences in appearance, laying ability, etc? If I were to order some of these and breed them, I want to make sure any chicks/pullets I sell are of good quality. You said you...

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

McMurray's just replied to me and said theirs are hybrids. So I'd like to find either another hatchery that has non-hybrids, or maybe another similar breed that is a good layer of large white eggs. I have a small market locally for people who want good white-egg layers, but many breeds I'm...

Looking for a hatchery for White Leghorns to breed

I'd like to get some hatchery-stock White Leghorns just for a backyard casual breeding project. I'm not interested in showing them or worrying about bloodlines or having "The Best" birds. I just want some nice healthy birds that are great layers and will breed true. Can anyone recommend a...

Any idea when my BR pullets will begin to lay?

Yep, all my turkeys and chickens are on 18% breeder pellets. I think you're right - it's probably the weather. It's been a rainy and all-around crappy spring so far. I'm sure it won't be much longer then. Patience is just not a virtue I was blessed with, lol.

Any idea when my BR pullets will begin to lay?

Nope, not free-ranged. They have a fenced yard that is free of any hiding places and a big coop with a dark-corner nest box and everything.....all the little homey touches they could ask for. Hmm, maybe it's the difference in region then - Upstate NY versus Texas. If you've been getting eggs...

    Anybody got any guesses?

Any idea when my BR pullets will begin to lay?

I've got 5 bourbon red pullets and 1 young tom, hatched late September/early October 2010. The tom has been strutting for well over a month now and they all have the outward appearance of proper adults. Given that they were from an autumn hatch, any guesses on when I might expect some eggs?

I was so thrilled with how well these came out that I just had to share this. These are coturnix eggs. Happy Easter everybody!!!

Anybody use an overhead projector for candling dark eggs?

I have Marans, and I'm toying with the idea of getting an old overhead projector for candling the eggs so I can see more than just an air cell. I currently just use a very high-tech flashlight with a toilet paper roll taped to the end to focus the light. With that at least I can find hairline...

Would like reviews on Premier1 movable fencing energizers

Hmmm. I didn't see that one before. Their website says they have it on closeout, "while supplies last". Are they discontinuing it? The specs say it will power 1 roll of 164' PoultryNet. Ideally, I would need it to support 1 164' roll and 2 smaller ones though (1 for the turkeys and 2 for...

Would like reviews on Premier1 movable fencing energizers

Well, I guess the solar not being a good option is actually a bit of a relief . . . $264 is an awful lot to spend. The plug-in could be an option. I have electricity in the barn, which isn't an unreasonable distance from the fencing areas. I'm just not thrilled with the idea of an extension...

Would like reviews on Premier1 movable fencing energizers

Hi all - I've had a couple lengths of Premier1 electric poultry netting for a couple years now, and I LOVE it! It's super easy to move and ultra lightweight. Until now I hadn't bothered to buy an energizer for it, just using it to keep the chickens and turkeys contained in their areas and...

    Incubator tray size for Coturnix

I had to order some other things too, so I went ahead and ordered from Flemings and got the partridge egg tray http://www.flemingoutdoors.com/plastic-partridge-egg-trays---chuck-80-st.html At the bottom of the item description it even says it will accommodate coturnix quail eggs. Thank you...
