Moved her into the dog kennel/cage and gave her a nesting box in that so she feels secure. She sat right back down on the remaining eggs, went back into her sitting trance- no problem. It's like she never was moved. Yeah!!!
My next question... do I need to put food in there for the chick...
Very helpful info, thank you! I've got a large dog kennel that I can put a 'nesting' box in and give her some room for food/water and roaming room. She is a pretty aggressive hen, so I'm not too worried about the other getting close. I'll keep you updated!! Pics soon!
I have a banty hen that went broody and picked the highest nesting box she could. She is about 3' off the floor. The first chick hatched today. Should I leave them be or move the chick, hen and unhatched eggs (3) to a box or something on the floor? I'm concerned about the chick taking a dive...
I was told that she was less than 1 year old when I bought her and 6 others, but I have my doubts. She is doing fine now and has made peace with the other hens and roo. She is the first one out of the coop in the morning and she herds them in at night. It's really funny. She always runs up...
Here's the symptoms of ocular Merics, which do not fit her description, not does her eye look like any photo examples of Merics I've seen.
Ocular Marek's (ocular lymphatosis):
Discoloration of the iris. The iris may turn grey or a pale blue color.
Deformity of the pupil. The pupil may...
Okay... after googling "chicken cataracts" I found out that Brahmans are susceptible to cataracts. I also found this, whose accompanying picture looks like my hen's eye:

Avian encephalomyelitis (AE) is an infectious viral disease of young

Here's a pic of her eye. Her other one looks completely normal. I don't see any other 'issues' with her. She is eating and drinking fine when I give her her own food and water. She follows me around while I'm in the garden. It's almost like she has limited visibility as she seems to follow...
Has anyone ever seen this? I recently acquired a young Brahma hen. She stumbles and seems to have a clumsy time getting around. She kind of walks like she has diving flippers on and sometimes bumps into things. She's being beat up by the other hens. She whines all the time and seems confused...
It's been pretty warm, but not as hot as it gets here later in the summer.
I do have another rooster and was recently given two young banty roosters by a friend that can't have roosters in town. Maybe she's trying to maintain her dominant status. She's always been THIC (top hen in charge)...
My Barred Rock has been 'yelling' since yesterday. She is at least 5 years old, but is eating, scratching, pecking and other normal hen behavior (except laying, which she hasn't done much of for a while). Other wise she is acting normally.
Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with her? She...
I've been lurking on here for several years. There is soooo much info shared- thank you to all. I've had my varied mix of girls- and a few boys for 4 years. They are a joy. I call them my 'chicken therapy'. I've recently been given 2 young banty roosters from a friend that can't have...
