Finally got my birds. 3 buff orpingtons, 3 australorps, and one freebie that is either a white rock or a white leghorn I think. The girls are 3 weeks old. First time outside.
Yeah, I wish they were closer. That's about an 8 hour round trip! Thanks for responding though. I guess I'll continue to check around, might even go with barred rocks if I can't get and orps. Anyone know of anyone local to SoMD that breeds BRs?
Hey y'all. Does anybody know of anyone in SoMD that breeds buff orpingtons? I may get them from Meyer but was interested to see if I could find them local first and avoid the $36 shipping. :-p
@DCchicken
Thanks again for the advice on the breeds, and on the swap, and feed. Ist nice to have many people with experience to learn from on this site!
@TurnipTruck
Btw I'm assuming by what you said that stauffers make their own feed? Do you know what's in it? Like how much protein it contains for example? Also, do they sell starter feed?
Awesome. Yeah I was thinking about going to stauffers. I usually get feed for deer there. That's cool that they'll give you the screening for free. What type of feed do you get from them?
Haha yeah, I have have a feeling six may turn into many more. Yeah I'm definitely interested in barred rocks. They are very pretty birds, and from what I've read, they are pretty docile birds. Any advice on where to get feed in SoMD? SS, Amish, TSC?
Thanks for the info! It is much appreciated! I think that I will start out with a flock of six hens. I had read somewhere that sometimes SS will take a big group order? I think I may actually start my flock in late September/October that way I should have laying hens in the spring. Glad to have...
Hey all! I'm just starting out in the world of chickens! I'm in St. Mary's and am looking to start a flock in the next few months. In the meantime, I'm trying to learn all that I can. Any one know of a good place to get chicks down this way? Maybe the farmers market in Charlotte Hall, southern...
Hey all,
I'm very excited to be starting a flock of chickens! I'm looking at breeds like, orpingtons, barred rocks, and australorps and was wondering if these breeds will be okay for a beginner? I'll most likely buy them from the local Amish. Anyway, what would would a good coop size for...
