Interesting! I did notice a couple eggs that were sort of splotchy medium/dark brown last week (I ate them, sorry ;), and I had a couple lighter eggs with speckles that I assumed were from one of my other mixed breeds -- I'll have to keep an eye out for variations. I know these dark ones are...
Hahaha! Easier said than done. Mine are all cross breeds. ;) But here is a side-by side of the Wellie cross egg (right) and an egg from a hen I think is a RIR x RIW mix, which just an average brown egg.
Her eggs are pretty dark, but I've seen photos of Welsummer eggs that look way darker...
Got this lovely lady a couple months ago as a 16-week pullet. She's been laying for a few weeks, and was the first to lay out of my 3. She lays 6 eggs a week. Her eggs aren't really dark brown, but are darker than average brown eggs for sure and more reddish. She's curious, friendly, docile, and...
OK, here's an update, and I'd love opinions about mixes now that they are full-grown hens! At 21 weeks, they are all laying. Below are updated photos.
Here are two photos of Charlotte, one of which really shows her beautiful neck/hackle coloring. She is clearly a large part Welsummer, and...
I have three mixed breed pullets (also hatched in May), and they definitely square off like roosters. They stretch up their necks, fluff up their feathers, and even charge at each other to peck. One of them sometimes gets up on the ramp to the coop, then flaps down at the other two to charge...
Thanks, all! This is my first time with mixes and it is fun! While I know what my birds will look like when I get a Barred Rock, Buff Orpington, et al, these ladies are a fun mystery and will indeed look different from the neighbors' flocks. The Wellie/RIR mix is the most social, very curious...
Thanks! That's a relief. I don't need any roos.
I was thinking my red bird might be Wellsummer x RIR, too. I've never had such motley mixes before. They're sort of fun just for backyard layers... it will be interesting to see what they look like full-grown! I won't be breeding them, and...
That's what I was afraid of, but upon closer inspection, they are rounded neck feathers with pointed dark pigment.
Here is the Welsummer pullet image on the BYC breed page: http://cdn.backyardchickens.com/5/59/800x600px-LL-59f3da65_IMG_2417.jpeg . Think it's just a coloring thing...
Pretty sure I have 3 pullets (no pointed saddle feathers yet, though I'm on the fence about the red bird), but any differing opinions on sex are of course welcome. They are around 16 weeks old.
I bought them from a farm that had the following breeds: Welsummer (pretty sure my red one is a mix...
