Strange, rubbery, fatty mass found in nest box [Graphic photos]

Thank you for the explanation and the links! I had just looked up "lash egg" from PoultryParent's comment, and read The Chicken Chick's article on it... she's great... but I am thankful you've included more links from other really reputable sources as well. I'm afraid this may be quite serious...

Strange, rubbery, fatty mass found in nest box [Graphic photos]

When I went out to collect eggs today, I found a very strange (and a bit disturbing) mass in with the eggs. Or maybe I should say massES, as there were smaller pieces as well as the one large mass. Since 'large' can be a subjective term, I measured the largest piece, and it's about 2" long...

My chicken is laying weird eggs! Is she sick? Pic, video

Hmm, I guess I'll try de-worming and look into other common chicken parasites. I might try adding some vitamins and electrolytes to their water for a few weeks, too, just for good measure. It can't hurt, right?

My chicken is laying weird eggs! Is she sick? Pic, video

You're right, they do lay some weird eggs sometimes, don't they!? I actually love getting fairy eggs! They're so cute! We love to see how different the eggs can be from store bought eggs, and compare the sizes, or see how maybe one egg has slight speckles on it, or another might have those faint...

My chicken is laying weird eggs! Is she sick? Pic, video

I feed them Dumor layer crumbles from Tractor Supply, which is a complete feed. They have oyster shell available, they free range all day and eat lots of weeds, grass, and bugs. We have a lot of clover and chickweed in the yard, too, which is high in calcium, and sometimes I like to bring in...

My chicken is laying weird eggs! Is she sick? Pic, video

That's actually something that happens now and again, for a few different reasons. It could be from a young chickens who hasn't worked all the 'kinks' out out her laying process yet. Sometimes an older hen will lay one of these "rubber eggs" if her diet is low in calcium, or if she's been under...

My chicken is laying weird eggs! Is she sick? Pic, video

I have a hen who keeps laying eggs with a soft spot. The shell is mostly normal except for a circle of extremely thin shell, about the size of a penny. No other hens are having problems, and none of the other shells are thin. I did have an issue a few weeks back where a few of the girls had...

Hard shell eggs laid with a single soft spot

I actually did find that article in my searching, thank you! I didn't find any examples that were quite like what my chicken (I assume it's the same one every day) has been laying. I imagine nutrition could certainly be a cause, and as an added measure we just switched back to layer crumbles...

Hard shell eggs laid with a single soft spot

Hello everyone! I've got a bit of an oddity going on over here... it seems that one of my girls keeps laying these eggs that have a soft spot on them. The egg seems to be fairly normal in every way other than a spot that maybe the size of a dime at most, that is so thin-shelled that it will fall...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Yes, I know, thank you. I meant that all my hens that lay brown eggs were already laying. That's why I said Brienne would be the only one who could have laid the 5th brown egg I was getting daily. She was the only brown layer we had who hadn't started laying yet. And yes, my Ameracauna is...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Just a follow up on our special little chicken... I finally caught her on film crowing! It's a weak crow, for sure, but there's no doubting that's what she's doing, lol! Every time I try to film or photo her, she immediately stops whatever it is that she's doing and just stares at me!! So this...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Lol, no I just couldn't bring myself to do it! Heehee!! Really, though, at this point I'm sure it's Brienne laying. We've gotten 5 brown eggs almost every day for the past 2 1/2 weeks, and she's the only one who would lay a brown egg. We have 4 Red Sex Links (Red Star sounds so much cooler...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

That's a good point - she's definitely not got a normal cycle. In all these months, where everyone else has been laying, Brienne has not. That giant, stand-up little soldier of a comb has been bright red for many, many months, and not a single egg. Now all of a sudden we've gotten 4 eggs from...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Okay, just an update, it's been two days since we've gotten a 5th brown egg. To recap, we have 4 brown layers in our flock, and on Wednesday and Thursday we got 5 brown eggs!! Friday and Saturday went back to normal, though; just 4 brown eggs. This could mean that Brienne never laid an egg at...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

That is absolutely fascinating!! I'm huge sucker for a good documentary, too! Honestly, the more I learn about chickens, the more they sound like feathery little mutants! I'm a X-men fan, so I can totally see my flock as a little mutant band of avian superheroes! Oh geez, I might need to draw...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Interesting...! I'm not sure I could do that, but I'm definitely going to research it! Also, we didn't get a 5th brown egg today, so I'm still not sure if there was just a hiccup with my Red Star hens. Time will tell... and maybe food coloring! Ha!

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Definitely not an egg song. She's never laid eggs before, and these are well... like she's screaming at you, kinda... I'll have to see if I can catch her doing it. They are shorter calls, not of a 'bock, bock bgack' type... more like a... oh geez, I can't even explain it! Not a normal kind of...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

Now, since I've never had a roo, what kinds of behaviors should I be looking for? I mean, I did have two (from the same clutch as Brienne), when they were all young, but I sold them at auction once they started crowing a whole lot. Brienne often stands upright like they did, or at least much...

    Our Reluctant Rooster

AtlantisPeeps lol thanks, and I agree, she sure is a neat-looking bird! I'm amazed by her coloring and patterning just about every time I look at her! Thank you so much to everyone who gave input! It's so nice to be able to ask a question and have it answered so helpfully.
