Is this a mal positioned pip or the start of unzipping??

Looks like normal unzipping, no worries! They go in a straight line around the egg until they can pop out the top. (Please, do not help or "meddle". Everything looks totally normal and it's very important the chick hatches out on it's own.)

So sorry they didn't make it! :(

Should I make a safety hole, ADVICE PLEASE

What breed of duck are they? Muscovies take 35 days to hatch, Calls around 25 days, and all others around 28 days. They could be a little behind due to temperature variations in the incubator. You shouldn't make any safety holes unless they have been internally pipped for more than 24 hours...

    Baby ducklings abandoned by mum

Yep, they should be fine alone at that age. :) Concentrate on getting your old silky back up in weight and feeling strong again. I guess being a mom took a little too much out of the poor girl.

    Duck breeding question

Ah, ok! Well, then hatch away now if you want some little ones! ;)

Agree with the others, looks like a Blue Swedish to me. :)

PLEASE HELP! Sick duck!! About 6-7 weeks old I believe

Do you have a heat lamp on them? Sounds like he's just too hot. Ducks pant like dogs to cool down, and their bills and legs will feel hot when they are over-heated. Can you maybe let him have a bath to cool down (not cold water, more like lukewarm) and see if that helps. If you have a heat...

    Angel wing??

Can you post a pic so we can confirm? How old is your duck? Angel wing is quite easy to fix if caught early enough by simply wrapping the wing in the proper position so it can correct itsself. There are many videos and sites online that show different ways to wrap wings for this purpose. :)

    Duck breeding question

Aww, glad your girl finally found herself a boyfriend she likes! :) As far as ducklings go, you might want to wait until Spring to let her hatch some. This isn't the best time of year for ducklings as it's turning cold and there will be alot less out there for them to forage on. Spring is...

    Help predator proofing my fence

I would definitely suggest hot wire around the outside of your fence line, and around the top. You will probably have to clear some brush and branches from being too close on those forested sides, but then it should be fine. You will want to do a walk around every so often to cut away new growth...

    No eggs?!

Typically, females will start laying the Spring after their birth (some do start earlier, but I don't think that is typical). So, I wouldn't expect eggs from your girls until Spring. My girls have always only laid from March until August each year (my girls range in age from 4-6 years old)...

Is the voltage in my electric fence high enough for foxes?

Wow, scary video so close to your pens! But great that they do respect the electric wires like that! Our resident fox is also very respectful of the fence. Thank goodness! I use a handheld tester where you stick the metal pin in the ground and touch the wire with the end of the tester. Are...

Is the voltage in my electric fence high enough for foxes?

Ok, thanks everyone for confirming that I do need to invest in a new box. I wasn't sure if it was warranted or not, but now I know it is! This has been my first experience with electric fencing, so I am still learning. :) Thanks all!

Anyone gotten the implant to stop a duck from laying?

Wow, I somehow missed seeing these responses to my post last year! Sorry about that, everyone! I guess I need to change some settings somewhere as I thought no one replied. Oops! Anyway, I just wanted to come back and give an update about the situation with my girl, Pepper. Unfortunately, I...

    Duck dry heaving??

My ducks do this often, usually after swimming. It seems to be them trying to clear water from their ears, as far as I can figure. It doesn't last long. Is your duck still doing it?

Is the voltage in my electric fence high enough for foxes?

Hi everyone! Just wondering how much voltage is required to keep out foxes? My fence used to give off 5000 volts, but recently has gone down to 2000 volts after a nearby lightning strike. Is this still enough to keep the fox out? (I have tested the box itself, without the wires attached to...

    Shoes for ducks?

Ducks have specialized circulatory systems in their feet which helps keep them from freezing in cold weather. They also just pull them up into their feathers to warm them up when they do get cold. Boots for ducks in the winter just aren't necessary. If you are concerned about them wanting to...

What kind of duck should I get?

I am partial to Cayugas and Call Ducks. All of mine are super friendly and social with me, but then again I did hatch out and hand-raise them myself. ;) If you have an incubator and the time to hand-raise them yourself, I would highly suggest that. This way they imprint on you and think you're...
