Possible egg eater - how to find out who??

Our coop is totally sealed. It is more rodent proofed than our house. In fact, if we wanted to, we could probably rent it out to a small family - concrete floor, running water, electrical, the works! Not just a shack in the back yard. We believe we have at least one egg eater. Our egg...

Possible egg eater - how to find out who??

With the current temperatures I feel a snake to be highly unlikely. Also, when we built the coop we ensured there was no way any rodent pests could ever get in. Yesterday we blew out one of the eggs and filled it with blue food coloring. When we went to collect the eggs the colored egg was...

Possible egg eater - how to find out who??

Yesterday my husband was in the chicken coop and there was 6 eggs (one was on the floor). He put the floor egg back into a nesting box and left without collecting the eggs as I was on my way home from work and I always collect them on my way up to the house. When I came into the house with...

    fertilized eggs

Thank you! Is there a cutoff time for these eggs? Obviously I realize that not all the eggs will be fertilized but it has happened once that I missed a couple of eggs as they were sitting on the floor and I didn't see them until the next day. Could these be starting to form? Also, my hens...

    fertilized eggs

Hello, This is going to seem like a really stupid question, but I have 12 pullets (six of which are laying regularily, and one that just started laying last night ) and one rooster. I have seen my rooster breed several hens but I don't want chicks so I am wondering what is the best way to...

Switching from crumbles to pellets - best brand?

I am going to switch my pullets from laying cumbles to pellets and I was wondering if anyone knows of the best brand to be purchased in Canada? The two brands that I have at my local feed store is Proform and Natural Harvest. Does anyone have any experience with either of these? Or maybe can...

We are about 20km outside of Kamloops. It snowed off and on Sunday but nothing stuck. Hoping watering isn't going to be a problem. We have a tap in the coop with running water and our automatic waterer is hooked up to it.

Thanks Hennible!! Do you have snow yet where you are? Any tips on keeping the girls warm over winter? We built our coop fully insulated (even the nesting boxes) with two large overhead heating lamps and we have a thermostat that regulates the temperature and monitors humidy levels. Right...

    Starting to free range

Thank you so much Mrs. K and everyone for your great advise and info! We are in BC, Canada and unfortunately airborn predators are very prevalent - eagles, hawks, huge ravens, you name it - we got it. We don't have an enclosed run at all but we built the coop near several large trees not only...

    Starting to free range

Where we are, 5:30 is at dusk this time of year. I will be on maternity leave at the end of March so I will be available as the days get longer to go down and close it up. I just hope everyone goes in and I'm not chasing chickens with a newborn strapped to me in the dark!

    Starting to free range

Hello All! I am new to chickens but I have recieved/purchased 12 hens and one rooster and they have been locked in their new coop for about a week. They came to me from friends and neighbors who free ranged them but I wanted them to fully get used to their new home before I let them loose...

How long after transport to start laying?

My patience paid off!! My egg haul from last night: Does anyone know how long it takes for Ameracaunas to start laying? I've heard they sometimes take a little longer but I would think at six months they should be good....

How long after transport to start laying?

Hello All! We finally finished our chicken coop on the ranch and we had some neighbors give/sell us some chickens over the weekend. We received two BR bantam hens, six Ameracaunas, and four red sussex.... and a rooster got thrown in. We have them all locked in the coop for now until they get...

What size coop for 15 chickens?

Thank you everyone! We decided to go as big as we could with a small attached storage room. These are the first pictures so far. We are going to put individual nesting boxes hanging outside. The run will be approximately 16x22 and fully enclosed (we do have a collie for watching livestock...
