    wierd acting hens (not laying)

My white hen is still laying. She will walk away and go about her usual activities. The other two... well thats a different story. The black hen sits and acts broody over the white ones egg (but has stopped laying herself)... and my Red hen actually sits on top of the blackHEN! (to extent we...

    liquid urine from hen

Have a hen which just stopped acting "broody" & just started laying again... today I noticed (when I was feeding them) that she squatted & peed... it was not solid, but liquid & slightly tinted like ours... never noticed this before. Is this normal? Are her eggs "safe"? Should I seperate her?

    feeding during juvenile molt

Got some starter feed with better label- 20% (other bag almost empty anyway).. Will be slowly cutting down treats (probably too much of a Good thing). Free range and their feed should be enough. Maybe a treat is better in winter when they arent ranging. Thanks ya'll! Should have seen em attack...

    easter egger comb issue

Following day combs looked better.. either something stressed em for a day (& only god knows what... as I have no idea), chicken molting pms attitide, or maybe a bug flew in that another wanted & a greedy one pecked... but whatever the issue was, I suppose must be resolved as all seems better.

    feeding during juvenile molt

All more reaaon to call feedstore and ask... cos I transfer the feed into containers when I get it. (I recycle old washed out plastic cat litter containers for this). I know it wont "prevent" a hungry mouse, but hope it keeps them away better than bag itself would... also easier to pour.... so...

    easter egger comb issue

Thanks so much "Wyandottes7"! I will keep close watch on them to be sure it doesnt get worse. If it does, I may have to temporarily seperate them for few days (aka: put them in "time out")!

    feeding during juvenile molt

I dont know what amount protein in starter as it is in a generic style bag from feed store. They absolutely devour the mash & mealworms, but seem less interested in the starter mix (they DO eat it... but not as enthusiastically as the mash/worm mix)... so perhaps it does not have a high protein...

    easter egger comb issue

Unfortunately I dont have internet phone, & kindle only has "selfie" camera (which I dont use). Ive tried taking photos with it, but you cant see what you're doing pointing it outwards... so sorry only a decription for now. If its pecking, could they be pecking just cos they just feel out of...

    easter egger comb issue

I have 3 EEs in a light juvenile molt (abt 11 wks old.) molting about two wks. I have noticed tiny dark spots on the very tip of their combs.. only the very tips! (today first notice). Its August- so obviously no frostbite. I have heard they can have comb issues due to: MITES/LICE (Ive seen no...

    feeding during juvenile molt

My 3 hens are currently in juvenile molt (about 11 wks old). They are still on starter feed, some chopped organic veggie food scraps (small morning treat) & some free ranging greens/bugs. Knowing they need more protein during molt, I've added mealworms and grain mash. They seem to have cut down...

cement floor run... what material best for keeping clean?

Thomas... we have no Windows, but several 3 inch vent holes on various sides of our smallish coop with screening stapled over them to prevent mice or small birds getting in. We plan to add a timed light in coop in autumn. The run is enclosed with wire fencing and a wavy roof which may add small...

    hello!

Yes, they are probably Easter eggers. (Thanks for the site connect). They were given to us from a friend who had an overabundance of chicks this year. I believe those folks have a variety of breeds & probably obtain them same as we did. I was so excited at the time we got them that I didn't...

cement floor run... what material best for keeping clean?

Love your coop.. looks fabulous! We are new to chickens (never raised around them or anything) so we have started out small,, three hens, small coop with small run (what we could afford to start off with). Our newness is why I am so glad for forums like these... where people are so nice & have...

    hello!

They are 3 Americaunas (I think)... named after the powerpuff girls cartoon...bubbles (the reddish one who is mischievous & bit of a clown), buttercup (the one that first looked like small penguin & now is all black... she is timid & shy), and blossom (the one who starts out looking like a...

cement floor run... what material best for keeping clean?

Our run is over cement (not by choice, but has to do... we have a moveable netted run for "ranging", too). The coop is about 6x6 for 3 chickens... and they will have access to this cement bottom run for rainy days & winter exercise (I they are brave enough). I have currently been using hay, to...

    hello!

Hello! I live in Pennsylvania and this June (2014) we got our first chickens at few weeks old. Online sites (especially BYC) have been wonderful help to us in learning to care for our "girls". Without these sites, I would have been in panic a number of times.. like when they are sunning and...
