    Cayuga Duck Flock

13 Ducks- 12 Cayuga and 1 Khaki Campbell. This flock started out as one drake and three females earlier this year. My females went broody and hatched eggs (including one Khaki Campbell egg from a neighbor's flock). We now have twelve females and one drake at the end of summer. We have...

    Icelandic Chickens

I might. I'll let you know, definitely! I am still growing out a bunch of chicks, and some do have rose combs, but I just gave away my oldest rose comb cockerel just before Hann disappeared (of course!). On the broodies.....how many eggs does Hetta have?  Could you give one or two to Haap? I'd...

    Icelandic Chickens

Thanks, Mike. It is Mike, right? Are you the one who breeds Icee sheep dogs? Any training advice? I've been reading a LOT on LGD sites, but I'd love to hear it from an actual breeder, although sheep and poultry are a lot different...

    Chick with stiff, swollen toe

Have a month old chick with an inflamed, swollen, and stiff toe. She is outside with her broody mom. No sore on the foot, so I doubt bumblefoot. Anyone see this before? I don't want to poke holes looking for pus in a tiny chick... Do you guys think I need to???

    Illinois...

I have a cockerel that does the same thing. He can walk and run, but he seems to prefer to hop, like a feathered kangaroo! He's never been stepped on of anything to my knowledge and seems to get along just fine with everyone else!

    Icelandic Chickens

Ok- had to share this one. From my next to last hatch- this one is a Sigrid line bird. He was born with ice white down, which is kind of strange looking on a chick, IMO. He also hatched out really early and wouldn't open his eyes for about 24-36 hours after the hatch and was really small at...

    Illinois traders!!!!

Thought I might post some pics of our week before Easter cockerels. I'm thinking these guys are going to all be rehomed, but they are a handsome bunch. Anyone looking for MORE roosters??? Lol! They all are crested and they all look like they might have the mottled gene too. They come from a...

You know me- LOVE those white birds! Lol!!! Very pretty bunch, Mary! Thought I might post some pics of our week before Easter cockerels. I'm thinking these guys are going to all be rehomed, but they are a handsome bunch. Anyone looking for MORE roosters??? Lol! Rose comb duckwing. He looks...

    Icelandic Chickens

Yay!!! That's great!!! I've got another broody myself. Thinking of trying your trick, Kaldakur and sneaking some chicks under her tonight. Less babies in the house!!

    Icelandic Chickens

Nah, I think it will be okay. The Ussery article in Mother Earth News really stirred things up. I am one of those who read it and started keeping Icelandics, but I think eventually the status quo will be restored. The fervor over Icelandics will die down and those who are hardcore fans will...

Good luck!!! I've sneaked chicks under broodys and it's worked out... Keeping fingers crossed for you! Diva- thanks for the ventriloquist idea. If my job as a teacher doesn't work out, I may just explore my options!!!

Which breeds did you wish you got?

Those look a lot like the hatchery Australorps I got to fill in an order. I'm wondering if the white goes away? I have one I call Dracula (lol) because she has a white face with black rings around her eyes and what look like long black sideburns. Will that white go away??? Hoping she will be a...

    Icelandic Chickens

Yeah, I agree- I never have more pullets than cockerels. That's why I asked what everyone does with all the extra boys. I hatched 7 Basque eggs this spring, and 6 were cockerels. They grew out pretty meaty, though. We processed them last Saturday. My first time. It was pretty gross, I have to...

    Icelandic Chickens

Lol! You are fine, Turkey! Love the roost pic. I need to build some lower ones for my babies. Right now, they kind of crouch in the corners and perch on the roosts early but then get kicked off by adults. I need to have a better grow out plan for chicks, I'm discovering. By the way, I'm loving...

    Icelandic Chickens

I actually already do those things too. I just noticed that the yogurt seemed to settle them down and help them feel better. These are the guys that came in from my broody, so I think their immune systems might have gotten a little compromised outside since they had such a hard start. I also...

    Icelandic Chickens

So, Red and Turkey, I've been having crying chicks too! I had one die as well. Not sure what is going on- it's like they have chick colic. It was driving me nuts, and I felt terrible and worried about more dying. I started feeding them plain yogurt and it settled them right down. They have been...
