    Sexing 2.5 month old poults

Strutting is a strong indicator. Gobbling is something mostly males do too. My wife and I spend a lot of time gobbling at our younger turkeys, the males are the only ones that gobble back. As a side note, zip ties work very well as markers on turkey shanks. When we see male tendencies we...

    CAN YOU FREERANGE A TRUKEY?

We free range our turkeys, and put them in at night. When we put a new set of turkeys in the turken pen we leave them in there for about 72 hours. Then we let them out. Every night we go out around dusk, walk to their pen, and they follow us in. Every so often we will have a lady that is...

New setup - GQF brooder, Dickey's incubator

Two years ago we started with four chickens in a little coup behind our suburban home. Two years later we live in a shack in the woods with chickens, ducks, and turkeys. We just decided to toss all of the DIY brooders and incubator. After a month of research and a drive to Millen GA we are now...

I bought some battered ducks. Need to rehab!

I found a gaggle of 25 Pekin ducks on craigslist for $150. I figured that was a great deal! So we drove out last night to pick them up. They are approx 13 weeks old (easter ducks).. Ugh.. They are battered, brown, and small. Poor critters. I will post some pictures later of my pekins side by...

    Turkey as a Pet

Meat turkeys are incredibly friendly, but they aren't "built to last". They are designed to be BIG animals. Have you (the OP, not SunHwaKwon) considered trying a heritage turkey, or something that will live longer than a year or two. (PS, I am aware that some people have had meat turkeys...

    Bedding for Broody Hens?

Be careful of lips and broody hens. A while back I was using one of my normal nesting boxes with a 4" lip , during the first few hours of hatch two of the little guys fell out and could not get back up, and momma was waiting for the rest of the eggs.. After that, I made a new broody box that...

4 Foot Tall Hardware Cloth or 5 Foot Tall Welded Wire?

We had a similar question when we were doing our chicken area. We framed out a 16X32 section of the yard. We used 5' welded wire fencing first, then ran 2' welded wire on the bottom section. Later we added electric wire to the outside, and laid 12"x12" concrete pads around the outside. We use...

Wanted - A broody hen in Central Florida

Good day! I am in search of a broody hen or two. If you have a small back yard flock with no roosters, then you are probably annoyed with the crazy hen that won't leave the nest! But, she is exactly what I need to sit on some eggs! Can pay cash, or trade for a non broody laying hen. I...

When is it not cost or labor effective to butcher?

Hey there.. Good for you for eating chickens. I like to skin my small birds. Bleed them.> Cut the feet, wing tips and heads. make a small incision in the breast skin, and tear like hell!! Within 45 seconds you can have a naked bird! Gut it, and throw it in a crock pot.. Three of four silkies...

Harvest pictures (non grahic), Meyers Fry Pan

Thats a really good idea! We will give that a shot when we transfer to the bags from the fridge to the freezer in a couple of days. There is no harm in feeding the innards to the dogs. Having the birds fasted makes the intenstines much easier to work with!
