    New member in WA state

Well hello and welcome neighbor! We live in Spokane for the moment trying to get moved into our place in Clayton. Your chicken setup puts mine to shame and everyone likes to tease that I have a chicken mansion! :) How old are your Australorps? I bought some as chicks from a lady down the road...

    Becoming a country girl!

Oh my gosh, I am so sorry to hear that. :( Good your kids are taking it well though. My kids always fall apart when anything happens to one, especially when they're so tiny and cute! Wish you luck on your next little baby. Sometimes it just happens and never really know why. My 7 year old's hen...

    Becoming a country girl!

Hello Country Girl! Just my 2 cents on feed store chicks and hoping to spare you what I've gone through...DON'T do it! I wish I had taken to heart all the pointers on chicken keeping before I gambled on feed store chicks. I have lost over half my flock from Marek's Disease since purchasing our...

    Dealing with Marek's

Thank you both for your advice and support. Unfortunately the furthest I had done with necropsy was histology before Mareks was confirmed. That's excellent advice though and perhaps I'll send the next in and pay the extra for pathology so I know more about what I'm dealing with. I'm thinking we...

    Dealing with Marek's

Just wondering how others deal with Mareks in their flock. I made the mistake of buying feed store chicks this year and have lost three to Mareks so far and another is on her way out. Of course it had to happen AFTER building my 12x36' dream hen house. I have a couple of roos so I can incubate...

Does any one think there backyard is a zoo/barn!!

Oh we don't have all those critters anymore! Just the farm animals and our pond. An outdoor aviary would be awesome! You must live somewhere warm. Or be willing to move :) Curious, what kind of fish do you keep? I do miss the tranquility of an aquarium...

Does any one think there backyard is a zoo/barn!!

Absolutely! At one point, my house looked like a pet store and my backyard was becoming a petting zoo! We had 3 55 gallon fish tanks, a 75 gallon, a 35 gallon, 2 five gallons as well as an outdoor pond...all stocked with everything from koi to African cichlids to cherry shrimp! We also had...

    Neighbor's Hen

Actually, her ear lobe color isn't white and I notice a bit of brown coloring at her chest and neck so maybe not. By looking at some blue Marans online I think donrae might be on to something! Please update and let us all know when she does start laying!

    Neighbor's Hen

I'm gonna say she's a blue andalusian. Her coloring matches exactly as ours. Her white and black marbled legs for sure! She should lay med white eggs for you if she is. Congrats! Ours is quite a character, bold, out going, and very inquisitive! I'm sure you'll enjoy her! :)

Just got an email that the histology is complete. It reads: "HISTOLOGY FINDINGS: Sections of trachea, lung, heart, liver, kidney, spleen, bursa of Fabricius, proventriculus, gizzard, intestine, pancreas, skeletal muscle, peripheral nerve have been examined histologically. Changes are in...

    icky soft shell eggs

Thanks for the correction. Don't mean to pass on misinformation. So having offered plenty of oyster shell since laying age, what causes odd shells? Or lack of? Is it just from stress? What's a good source of calcium carbonate? Or I should say an economic source?

    Getting a goat??

I second Nigerian Dwarfs. They're small and easy for kids to handle plus they're good for milk. Pygmies are small also but are more for meat than milk. If you simply want pet quality, weathers would be a good choice. Whatever breed you choose, keep in mind that you'll want at least two since...

    icky soft shell eggs

Our girls have laid an array of unusual eggs...tiny fairy eggs, super long double yolkers, shells that look like pearlized plastic, some that look like they've gone through a texture spray, some with kind of a swirl like an ice cream cone, and one with no shell at all! The rubber egg was the...

    Incubation deformities?

Thanks for responding. Leads me to believe it probably was from incubation then. Or hereditary. Guess I'll find out when I start hatching next spring if it's in the genes. That is, assuming I can hold a steady incubator!

Why did you join Backyard Chickens?

I joined because just about everything I googled that was chicken, duck, goose related brought me to this site!! All the members here have been my guides to raising chickens over the past year and a half and I am so thankful to have such a great resource available. Or maybe it's because the cute...

Help :( sick silkie. Hopefully not merek"s

How disheartening. I'm trying to pull back from my attachments to our birds as kind of an emotional self defense I guess. It's hard though. I never thought one could become so attached to chickens! Really, I bought them with the intention of a steady food supply but they quickly stole our hearts...

    Incubation deformities?

Hi everyone! Kind of an odd question but can curly toes in chickens be caused by improper incubation? All but one of my BA chickens have curly toes. I bought them at 3 days post hatch from a private breeder who said she had troubles keeping the temp and humidity stable. I wouldn't think much of...
