Update: scab is looking ok (I realise that it looks black in the photo, but it's a nice dark red in person). There's no warmth or anything like that from the site. He does have large pads, it's not swelling.
And just to show the other side since a few of you were asking about it:
I did the squeezing and the poking to make sure that nothing came out. Continue as going it is then :) Thanks for the second opinions everyone, much appreciated!
I'm surprised they're not sleeping on the perches… but I have one who insists on sleeping in the nest box so I know the pain of them sleeping in random places.
I don't think that wetness is from one chicken. When did this start? I think it might be a bad case of condensation.
They do have a...
As long as it's not anything sharp, it's ok to massage her throat… the problem is that you don't know what it is that's stuck. Use your best judgement for how it feels. Remember that if you can get her to stretch out her neck and tip her head back, you'll get a better view down there.
It definitely wasn't. It was small bits and pieces.
Top and everything apart from the pads looks healthy (just uncared for). Checked for mites, he hasn't got any. I'm wondering what surface he was on to leave his legs in that shape :idunno
It's unlikely to be the cold. Chickens can and will quite happily run around in the snow in below freezing temperatures. It's more likely that she ate something she shouldn't have and has something stuck in her throat or got into a fight with something that hurt her. Can you post a video and/or...
Can you get a side on photo? At 5 months, you'd see some saddle feathers on a male. From your photos, I can't see any, but it's also not 100% clear.
IME, less that 10% of the cockerels I've had were crowing at 5 months. None of my 7 month old boys are crowing yet either so IMO not a good indicator.
I received an older cockerel a few days ago who arrived with bumblefoot (confirmed by me and another experienced chicken keeper).
He came off a farm, so the previous owner cannot tell me exactly how long it's been there for. Suffice to say, looks like it's been a while.
To treat, I soaked his...
Do you know what the genetic factors are around wattle sizes? Both parents are "normal" wattled birds, whereas hers are bigger than most of the cockerels her age.
Hi all, I hatched two from my Light Sussex cockerel crossed with a gold Legbar 7 months ago. By week 5, I had one pegged to be a boy as he was growing a comb and the other a girl.
The slight hickup is that they are both now 7 months old and while the "boy" has pretty big wattles and comb...
Hi, I offer my incubator for rent when I'm not using it and you could collect from near Cambridge North station (I work there sometimes - going to be there all day tomorrow).
My Janoel12 is available now and can take ~20 quail eggs for automatic turning or ~48 for manual turning.
The bigger...
My old hens do that sometimes. As long as they have balanced feed, it should be fine. It might help if you give them access to oyster shells or another source of calcium.
Some people also add apple cider vinegar to the water.
junebuggena: I see what you mean now! She does have very faint barring on the lighter feathers which didn't come out in the photo. It's mostly on her underside and the photo was very much from the top looking down on her.
The Legbars are siblings… I've seen a fair few of them and never seen one with clear barring. Do you have a photo of what you mean? I'm wondering if your Legbars have deviated from ours and it's just a standard difference.
The older one has definitely got Legbar in it because the Legbars are the only breed I've got which has a crest and the older chick grew one over the last week or so. It's also showing the same orange/rust/red colouring on the wings that the Legbar cockerel developed when he was their age.
