That makes sense. I was mainly just commenting that the smallest rooster also seems to be the most manly rooster. I find that hilarious, and often true to life.
Thanks everyone for the prompt responses! I know most people are usually looking for pullets, but in this case, I'm happy to hear it is a cockerel. Funny, so much smaller than my Marans cockerels, but seems more manly.....first to approach when we go in the run and refuses to be picked up and...
In July we hatched two Ameraucana chicks. I've been convinced they were both pullets. One is black, on is blue, and the black is extremely small compared to the blue. A few months ago, I started wondering whether my blue pullet is actually a blue cockerel. I'm pretty convinced now, but snapped a...
I live in Central Wisconsin, first year with chickens. I will not heat their coop at all, just make sure they have great ventilation and can get out of the wind and drafts. It is dangerous to supply heat because if the heat goes out, they will not be acclimated to the cold and they would likely...
And finally 2 Amerecaunas. One blue, one black. Blue one had me thinking roo at one point, because it is twice the size as the black, but looks like a pullet to me now. Black I think is a pullet.
I just thought I would let anyone interested in Wisconsin that I found a reasonably priced source for organic feed for your pullets and hens. I just paid $37.20 for 100 lb's of organic pullet starter, and I can get organic layer feed for a couple of bucks less. It is from Big Gain......I'm also...
I just integrated four six week pullets who never used nipples in with 9 two week chicks who were using nipples. The pullets would not use the nipples as long as I left their old waterer in there, so I took it out, and they started using the nipples. Chickens are a lot smarter than we give them...
I'm not concerned one way or another, but I'm curious what you think. This is a Black Copper Marans, only 16 days old today. Comb is coming in more quickly than my other 8 Black and Blue Copper Marans, so I'm guessing this is a future roo (sounds better than cockerel to me, lol). Curious if you...
I got one blue/silver and one black then! Hooray......hopefully one of them is a hen, I don't think any of the other eggs are going to hatch out. I think she held the eggs for longer than I would have liked prior to me purchasing them, as my BCM hatch rate is significantly higher, and I know...
When I've done meat birds, I just put a glug or two in a 5 gallon pail. So maybe it was a teaspoon to tablespoon per gallon. I am not convinced it made any difference, but it will not harm them at all. I used ACV with the mother in it.
I believe eating and drinking are the key. Chickens can be like people.....sometimes they just want some "me time", but as long as it is getting food and water, I would keep watching it, but not be too concerned.
Went out and checked on the chicks this morning, both Amercaunas have clean legs, and the couple of BCM's I checked have hairy legs. Interesting that color of the chicks within the same breed can be so different.....I had no idea.
