    Is this a chicken egg?

Yes that’s a chicken egg! If you crack it open you will find most likely just white, no yolk. I have had several of these from hens who have been laying for years. I think with extended summer daylight hours their egg cycle gets a bit ahead of itself but not enough to produce a fully formed egg...

Old Fashioned Broody Hen Hatch A Long and Informational Thread

I have three hens all broody. They were all in the same henhouse (I have three henhouses) so while the other non-broody girls kept depositing eggs I figured when it was hatching time the wee ones would be safe. Yesterday morning I came out to find one of the broodies in the same nesting box...

Hello all, my barred rock Henrietta died suddenly after 1-2 days of lethargy and after having just hatched 3 chicks a couple of weeks earlier. Eating drinking , pooping normally until then. no weight loss. Then my RIR Ginger, about 3.5 years old had a few months of not "being herself" isolating...

How long before a broody hen will lay eggs again?

Well my Cornish "Tilly" has gone broody AGAIN...grr! this first time lasted about a week, and she was back to laying after about a week or so. Then she was laying as usual for 2 months and she is broody again. this time we are going on 2 1/2 weeks! She has also moved to the bottom of the...

How long before a broody hen will lay eggs again?

Well, I have got my answer as well...Tilly finally started laying about 10 days after coming off being broody (no eggs hatched as I mentioned) but her laying cycle seems to be a bit screwy. Two days in a row I got 2 soft-shelled eggs from her and then much later in the day a normal egg. and...

Do I need to treat mites in asymptomatic girls?

cut and pasted reply: Hi there, well, I treated my girls by sprinkling them all over (backs, under wings and vent area) avoiding their heads with sevin dust first and then diatomaceous earth. They did a nice job distributing it themselves by ruffling and shaking their feathers after, so I...

Do I need to treat mites in asymptomatic girls?

Hi there, well, I treated my girls by sprinkling them all over (backs, under wings and vent area) avoiding their heads with sevin dust first and then diatomaceous earth. They did a nice job distributing it themselves by ruffling and shaking their feathers after, so I believe it got down to the...

Comment by 'coconutprincess' in item 'Star'

I have to agree...I have 3 Red Stars, Princess (who lives up to her name, should've called her Queenie), Coconut, and Brownie. They are fantastic, consistent layers of HUGE eggs!!! They have not taken a day off since they started laying. Who would have thought that such big eggs could come from...

Do I need to treat mites in asymptomatic girls?

Thank you for that advice! Now I am wondering if I should just go ahead and use the Sevin dust I have read about since they take dirt/dust baths frequently during the day and that obviously has not helped...or does diatomaceous earth have some special properties that regular dust/dirt does not?

Do I need to treat mites in asymptomatic girls?

Hi, I was giving some treats to the girls tonight and after patting them on the back "full squat mode" i noticed some teeny and I mean TEENY white specks in the seam near the cuff of my black jacket. I thought they were dust or pine shavings but they didn't brush off so easily...upon further...
