I could not agree more with your take on this issue. Sadly this is not the only problem the EU has at the moment or rather it has since its beginnings.
True, at least that is my experience with them. When I am dealing with any wild chicken I just sneak up on them at night because when it's fully dark they are really vulnerable as you approach them, even some wild birds are...it's in their nature.
Also if you guys clipped their wings a while ago...
I would seriously consider catching them at night when they get back into the coop and clip their wings. It is painless and often effective, I would give that a try.
