To be fair- I’ve only seen him (“Blue”) do it twice and I think I’ve heard it happen 2 other times over the past few days. I’m out there quite a bit and the rest of the time they are all a big happy family. I assume it will get worse as he matures more to 16-20 weeks. I guess that’s what I’m...
It’s sad because his 3 GORGEOUS “brothers” that I rehomed are doing the same thing to my friends hens and they are free ranged on a huge property. So it sounds like he’s going to possibly cull those 3. The plan was he would allow all of them to live on his property. They’re not fighting at all...
So I have my second flock of docile Cochins. My last flock was 9 hens with 1 roo. I raised them together from hatchery chicks. I don’t recall my roo ever going through a problem phase as a youngster. In fact I don’t even remember when he started mating the girls. It was a pretty uneventful...
Thanks! I’ll try eggs :) I really loved that my old flock ate greens. They were long lived and laid to 9 years old. I felt I had them on a healthy diet plus they had fun pecking the romaine lettuce . I will give the eggs a try and if they eat that I may try mixing greens in.
….according to my 15 week old Cochins. Now my last Cochin flocked LOVED these foods so I just don’t get it. They are eating their organic crumbles and they’ll eat black soldier fly larvae , mealworms, scratch …but whenever I try a human food, they peck it once and then ignore it. I have so...
That’s true. Well my 3 spectacular roosters left today to their new home. I kept my favorite boy so we’ll see. My flock looks so blah now after losing the beautiful boys. Their beautiful red bling really added a lot of beauty.
Thanks for your reply! Standard Cochin roosters tend to be more kind and gentle than the Bantams so I may luck out. They’re 14 weeks old and I will be keeping one to see how it goes. 🤞
I have 9 gorgeous (!!) 14 week old splash Cochins. 4 roos - 5 hens . I’m rehoming 3 of the roos this week but unsure on whether to keep the fourth and see how it goes. 1 roo- 5 hens. I have had people tell me ( at the hatchery) that they have had that ratio with no problem. My last flock...
She used to use a nest box when this first started so it may have originated from rubbing the nest box but I don’t know why they didn’t grow in afterwards. No more nest box…
She doesn’t use a nest box- they have them but they prefer laying on the shavings behind the coop door. No rooster here. They all look very full of feathers normally at this time of the year. This is the first time in 9 years I’ve seen this. I do hope they come in with next molt but since...
Mine used to be like that and things just resolved on their own. I seem to recall that the last time they were bald was when I still had my rooster. Since just having 5 hens here, no more bald butts.
Hi,
One of my Cochin hens that I've had for about 9 years now- since she was hatched- has a bald spot that won't seem to fill in on her chest. She has the little white starts, but nothing comes of them. This has been going on for about 8 months. We live in northern Minnesota and can get...
I just checked on her and she looks normal again. Whew! I emptied out her nest box- put in fresh hay and turned the fan on. I also put her out again for awhile and let the hose run in the dirt by her so she pecked a bit in the water. Is this a common problem with broodies in the heat?
Hi- so I have a white Cochin ( I think she’s 6 or 8 can’t recall exactly when we got them as chicks) and she’s been broody for about 2 weeks now. This morning her crown was not red anymore- face looked very speckled and eyes were closed. We have had a few days in the 90s ( Minnesota) and this...
Hi all,
I have just 5 Cochin hens left from our original flock of 12 years ago. These five girls are I think about 6 years old. One of my white hens is in molt and has lost most of the feathers on the top of each wing plus a section on her butt and neck. She is pecking her wings and breaking...
I just leave the aprons all summer... so they're all dressed up for months! :) I also wondered what tells him to stop mounting them..? Shorter daylight or ?? He does not do any of that during the winter.
