You know, I have to disagree that these are cornish crosses. They have more feathers than any cornish crosses I've ever raised. Can you get a picture of their legs (you'll have to get on the ground :) ) ?
They are beefy (can you say that about chickens? ) for leghorns. Where did you get them?

I just picked up my Bielefelders. I am planning on the same thing as you. I've also got some surgical experience. Private message me with your location: I'd love to potentially get together so we can teach each other and it doesn't seem friendly here.
You've all heard of the Black soldier fly larvae feeding buckets, where you put road kill in a bucket and the black soldier fly lays eggs, the larvae crawl out and feed your chickens? I hear that the chickens gather near the opening, just waiting for that juicy tidbit to fall out...
I live in...
We've ordered Cx from many different hatcheries and have noticed a wide variety in health, weight gain etc from different hatcheries. In general, you will lose fewer in early times if you order from hatcheries close to you (stress from shipping) and losing chicks later (like the 11 weeker) is...
We used to keep our feed like Mary, but in plastic trash cans. Don't do that, spend more for the metal ones because mice will chew through the plastic ones. Now we do what Mary does.
I will say the same thing I said before, free protein! (for the chickens, although there are humans who are testing this sort of protein too!)
Seriously, I would love a black soldier fly larvae farm! but they are not native here in the north, where it froze last night and we are expecting snow...
Hm.. We paid for the "peckomatic" which is very similar to this. I love it and use it every summer for our meat birds.
I don't have any financial incentive to talk about peckamatic, I just really love the product!
We used to have problems with mice eating food when we used the feeders you can buy at farm/fleet. I transitioned to a peckomatic which only drops food when a chicken pushes against the feed disk and it only drops a small amount. This decreased our rodent problem tremendously. I also have...
I had a broody hen all summer and her eggs never hatched so I didn't worry about her, just let her sit on her eggs and made sure she was still eating. When the eggs got stinky, I cleaned her nest.
The problem comes in that last week, she actually hatched two babies! Now normally I'd be...
Thanks for your thoughts on raising cx. We don't have the exact same challenges since we live rural, but there is always stuff to learn and improve. Cx are not popular as some think they are frankenbirds, but we have had the same experience with them as you. If you treat them like birds...
Hello! It just occurred to me that you can bring hatching eggs on the plane in your carryon. I will be flying to SF for business, next week with my return flight leaving April 15th. Maybe I can use this trip to bring home some hatching eggs that I can't find here in WI. Does anyone have eggs...
I've read most of this thread now and have convinced myself that I want to start with this breed. Where would you guys suggest I get eggs/chicks/birds? I would like to get as close to the SOP even though I don't show. I would like eggs and meat. I'm in Wisconsin if that makes a difference...
Very interested in these toads. Sustainable meat birds is a very laudable goal. I've been disappointed with freedom Rangers; toads could be the alternative. I'm in western WI when you're ready to branch out, but I'm not NPIP.
