    Two Shivering Hens???

Two of my hens are just hunkered down, fluffed up and shivering in separate corners of my coop. It's like 40 degrees out and sunny and warm, so they shouldn't be cold...any ideas on what they may have? No other symptoms...eyes aren't watery, no sneezing...I don't want it spread to everyone :(...

    Wounded chicken

I just went out to find one of my hens has been plucked almost completely clean down her back and has an open wound as well. Would the rooster do this? We have had him for a couple years now and he has always been pretty nice to the hens and gentle with people as well. So, I am just wondering...

this is going to sound silly

I live in WY and our walmart always has these, so if anyone needs one send me a message. I might even have some empties in my loafing shed already. I had a friend makes some bags out of their black sunflower seed bags too. I imagine they will turn out nice too, but I have those bags too, they...

Killing, Plucking, Eviscerating, & Cutting Up Your Chicken - Graphic!

I wasn't able to read all the replies to this post, so here is my question. Anyone here ever used their old laying hens for meat? When you're processing them can you see eggs inside? Sounds strange to me, but the gal I sold some of my old birds to told me one of them had some eggs forming...

Hen laid a soft egg with a cord attached.

I get soft eggs once and a while, so I know what you're talking about. I think its just a defect. Just like once and a while people are born with defects. The egg probably didn't get enough calcium to make the shell hard. I have 21 hens and it probably happens a couple times per year. Sometimes...

Is it ever too late to start lighting (for egg laying)?

Anyone have any ideas if I have been doing artificial light for about a month now, and production just completely dropped off. 21 hens laying 0-2 eggs/day. It just happened within the last few days and I don't know why or what to do. I have a couple of old girls who don't lay much anyway, but...

    Sparrow Control Ideas?

Well, my coop and run are not covered. It is an unconventional chicken run. It is an old set of loafing shed & we turned one into a coop, and the run is an old horse corral with chain link. The whole set up is over 3000 square feet so I would have to cover all of the top and the chain link sides...

    Sparrow Control Ideas?

So, I have struggled with sparrows in the past but they are multiplying like rabbits & getting smarter all the time. They are no longer afraid of the Magic Halo or the Owl figurine, they seem to be learning to avoid the trap as I used to be able to "empty & refill" it several times daily but now...

Will chickens eat safflower, black oil sunflower and thistle seeds?

Great, thanks so much. I was afraid I would buy it all and those would be the only thing in the world chickens don't like. Thanks again.

Will chickens eat safflower, black oil sunflower and thistle seeds?

Hello, I am trying to reduce my sparrow population as they are eating my chickens out of house and home. Trapping has been slow going. I read that they don't like safflower seeds, black oil sunflower seeds and niger thistle seeds. My chickens are of course molting, so I thought this would be...

    Bears sniffing around the coop

Hi, I pasted some "Bear Aware" information for you below. Just google bear aware if you need more info. We live with grizzly and black bears and I can tell you that it is not something to say 'oh its just a cute mama and baby' about. The people who say that tend to be the ones that end up...

How do I get rid of house sparrows?

Thats gonna need to be one long pole and my electrical lines run through the tree, so no thanks. All my extra feed is in sealed bins but they eat the feed in the chicken feeder so sorry but thanks anyway, and we don't have fire ants either.

How do I get rid of house sparrows?

The sparrows nest in a tree above my chicken coop. In order to remove their nests I would need a crane as the tree it about 3 times taller than a one story house. It seems my only viable option is trapping and I am going to give it whirl.

How do I get rid of house sparrows?

Thanks. I will do that. There used to be only a small flock and it wasn't an issue, but the last few months they've been having a family reunion and I can't take it any longer. Thanks again!!

How do I get rid of house sparrows?

We have tried bird seed in the yard hoping they will stay away from the chickens but there are so many sparrows they clean out the feeders and go back for chicken feed. What is a safe box? Will my chicken still be able to eat? Thanks

How do I get rid of house sparrows?

Any ideas on getting rid of house sparrows? They are eating about 10 pounds of feed every 2-3 days. I have moved the feed, used fake owls, I have 2 cats and nothing keeps them away. We technically live in the City Limits too so we can't shoot them:( Any idea would be greatly appreciated...
