Hello everyone, I just want to give an update for future reference in case anybody wants information about free ranging quail.
The quail stuck around for about 3 weeks after I released them. They acted very much like the chickens, except the quail stayed under cover for most of the day, only...
My quail are descended from wild bobwhites from where I live. So they're not domestic. They were hatched from some wild quail eggs.
Nobody seems to have answered my question about whether I could use a gps tracker to keep track of them though...
Just a little update: after I posted this I set my...
I have heard about people using gps tracking devices on falcons and racing pigeons to keep from losing them. I was wondering if you could do this with quail and allow them to free range, using the gps to track them down when they wander too far?
So I want to cut electricity expenses, and I'm opting for getting a broody hen to replace my incubator and brooder. What's the best bird for hatching and caring for chicks? Preferably one that will be able to take care of other species, like ducks
I'd like to reiterate my thanks to you all for your suggestions, including you, TalkALittle, and cavemanrich. And you have my word that Ill do my very best to keep my chickens as safe as I can, and if I do put my rooster in the cage, I will keep a close watch out for any predators that may try...
I'm frustrated about the situation as raising birds are my only source of income and in a bad mood because I'm arguing with my dad. I apologize if I'm not being very grateful. I appreciate your advice. I just don't want to get into a debate if that's ok.
I don't think bears could get through the...
I've kept pigeons in quarantine in said crate for several weeks and never lost any. It had a bottom on, though.
The dog cage is not much smaller than the coop they're in now.
I'm totally not in the mood for arguing though. I get enough of that at home.
What? Testing the process with one bird instead of putting all my birds at risk for predation?
This rooster attacks the other birds and me and anybody else who comes near every day, so I'm going to butcher him. But if I can use him to test the new cage and see if its safe against predators...
Thanks for the suggestions and information everyone, Ill be looking it over and considering my options.
And were talking about all of the predators, BertS. All of them. Cats, dogs, foxes, bears, cougars, eagles, owls, raccoons, skunks, weasels, wolves and coyotes and probably a lot of other...
Hi, I've had bobwhite quail, pigeons, chickens, and a duck for about 2 years now. I've been keeping them in those small little premade coops you buy at Murdoch's, and I'm just about fed up with them.
I have a lot of problems and I'm trying to figure out the best way to solve them.
First, I'm a...
Since it's happened twice I would guess its something to do with their food or housing. IMake sure that the food is free of mold (no clumps) and the they have clean water everyday, and that there isn't any old or moldy food or dirty water or unsanitary conditions for them to get into. I've had...
Oh, I should add that the meat should be fine, it was under twenty degrees outside and the body was still warm when I found it, so no chance of going bad.
Today I went out to feed my birds and found that the door was open, half of them were gone, one was on my roof, one was lying in there dead, there was a little bit of blood inside but otherwise very little evidence. I don't know what killed the birds.
I processed the one dead quail, it looked...
I had 7 bobwhite quail chicks and one died, others sick, tired, diarrhea, chilled. I suspect from contaminated water, it stunk pretty bad. It could also be from some plants they ate. I moved them and gave them water with white vinegar and put garlic in their feed. What else should I do?
